Czech Republic: Yet another audio recording documents real estate agent discrimination against Roma

21.9.2017 12:34 Shortly afer Romea.cz published a recent report about an audio recording capturing an example of a practice engaged in by landlords in the Czech Republic who, in violation of the law, a priori refuse to lease their apartment units to prospective tenants because they are of Romani origin, our editors received another audio recording of such an interaction. This new recording is of a telephone coversation between Miroslav Brož, a social worker, and an unnamed employee (probably a secretary) of a real estate company in Teplice.  full story

Declaration against xenophobia signed by 15 prominent figures in Czech town of Liberec

Czech Police meet with Romani recipient of MBE to compare experiences in working with the Romani community

11.8.2017 9:42 ROMACT, a program of the Council of Europe, organized a meeting in the Czech town of Litvínov yesterday between local police officers, crime prevention assistants, and social workers with a Romani police officer who is a recipient of an MBE in the United Kingdom, Petr Torák. Mayor Kamila Bláhová who welcomed the officer to the town hall after his travel from Great Britain.  full story

8.8.2017 8:25 The anniversary of Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, which commemorates the unprecedented event of the murder of all prisoners of the so-called "Gypsy camp" at Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of 2 August and early morning of 3 August 1944, was marked this year by Czech Culture Minister Daniel Herman through a video message. "We are remembering the victims of the murder of the Romani family camp at Auschwitz," he said, adding that this year he would not be able to attend commemorative events in the Czech Republic due to work obligations outside the country.  full story

The man is not seen in the video but his voice can be heard encouraging the child to use other vulgar terms such as "fuckers".   full story

Czech firm able to negotiate sale of pig farm on Roma genocide site for first time

31.7.2017 15:40 Czech Radio's Radiožurnál station reports that the AGPI agricultural company has held its general meeting and agreed to transfer the pig farm at Lety to the Czech state. The board will now be entrusted with negotiating the price and other conditions of the sale with the state.  full story

US media cover alleged problems between Romani immigrants and locals, many say prejudice is to blame

25.7.2017 8:14 The attention of national media in the United States has been drawn by the immigration of roughly 40 Romani asylum-seekers, originally from Romania, into a small town of 7 000 near Pittsburgh, PA called California. USA: Petition to rename the "Gypsy" series warns of dangerous stereotypes

Czech EdMin closing one funding avenue for teaching assistants for socially disadvantaged pupils

22.7.2017 14:29 According to recent reports, the Czech Ministry for Education, Youth and Sport has decided that as of September 2017 it will no longer continue its development program that finances assistants for teachers working with socially disadvantaged pupils. According to the website asistentpedagoga.cz, which serves teaching assistants, in practice this will mean an end to the vast majoirty of teaching assistants now working in the schools.  full story

Czech Republic: Commemoration of Romani partisan will plant tree in his honor

Romani fashion designer wins one million Czech crowns, will launch brand

Belgian edition of TV competition "The Voice" won by 13-year-old Romani girl from Slovakia

Czech Police charge bodybuilder with threatening Roma, he faces three years if convicted

29.6.2017 17:06 Filip Grznár (age 32) of Plzeň has been charged by detectives in Chomutov, Czech Republic with committing violence against a group and its individual members and approving of a crime. "Using the publicly available computer network, he disseminated a video recording in which he himself appears and approves of the commission of the serious crime of a recent murder at a housing estate in Chomutov," said the press spokesperson for the Ústecký Regional Police Directorate, Lieutenant Colonel Marie Pivková.  full story

Czech Police investigating video in which non-Romani bodybuilder threatens Roma in Chomutov with murder

27.6.2017 15:09 Police in Chomutov, Czech Republic have confirmed they have begun investigating the video recording in which the bodybuilder and Internet "celebrity" Filip Grznár comments on the recent murder of a Romani man there. "For the time being, an investigation is underway on suspicion of the crime of approving of a criminal act as per Section 365 Criminal Code, or perhaps incitement to hatred against a group of persons or restriction of their rights and freedoms as per Section 356 Criminal Code," police spokesperson Marie Pivková told news server Romea.cz yesterday.  full story

Čeněk Růžička: It's strange for LGBT people to hold the rainbow and Romani flags while speaking of Roma pride

organized by the Prague-based ARA ART association, whose director, David Tišer, is an activist, artist, and Romani Studies scholar who is a member of both the LGBTI and the Romani communities.
