Announcement of November 10 march invalid-Prague City Hall

The Prague City Hall believes that the announcement of a march through Prague’s historical Jewish Quarter on November 10, the anniversary of the extensive pogrom on Jews in Germany in 1938, known as Kristallnacht is invalid, spokesman Jiri Wolf told CTK today.

iser of the event – the Young National Democrats group – did not legally exist on the day when the march was announced and does not exist till now, Wolf said.

If rightist radicals want to hold their march they have to submit a new announcement, he said.

Previously, the Prague City Hall banned the march but the City Court cancelled its decision. Prague authorities thus looked for another method to prevent the event.

It has been found out that the Young National Democrats association was not yet registered on August 27 when they submitted an application for the march.

The Interior Ministry announced that a group called the Civic Association Young National Democrats was registered on September 13.

The August announcement is therefore invalid. Erik Sedlacek who represents the association had no right to take any legal steps on behalf of the association apart from its registration, Wolf said.

If the Civic Association Young National Democrats wants to hold its event it will have to announce it to the City Hall at least five days before it, he said.

The radicals say they want to protest against Czech soldiers’ participation in Iraq with their march.

The march has been protested against by the Prague Jewish Community that was joined earlier this week by the Jewish Community in Teplice, north Bohemia, that had 5000 members in the 1930s and was the second strongest in the country.
"I reject any passivity and…saying we can do nothing. We have experienced this in our history many times before, and I would not like it to be repeated," President Vaclav Klaus said previously.

Former president Vaclav Havel said the event must be cancelled.

"It is difficult to ban it by bureaucratic means, but it can be cancelled. Such a provocation cannot be held. It starts inconspicuously, and one never knows how it can continue," Havel said.

The planned radicals’ march has also drawn attention of Czech compatriots’ associations in Israel and of Israeli papers.
