Czech amendment to school regulations is a step backward, actual needs of children to be ignored
The Czech Education Ministry has recently sent an amendment to decree no. 27/2016, Coll., on the education of pupils with special educational needs and gifted pupils, to the inter-ministerial commenting process. If the amendment is adopted, it will negatively impact education, as it will make it possible for more children to be enrolled outside the mainstream even when such enrollment is not in their best interest.
Klára Laurenčíková, chair of the Czech Government Human Rights Council‘s Sub-Committee on the Rights of Child, disagrees with the proposed changes to the decree and considers them to be a step backward. In her opinion, if adopted this amendment would contravene the Education Act itself and does not follow the actual interests of the children being educated in the schools.
