Czech far right DS party registers youth branch

The Czech Interior Ministry on Tuesday registered the new Workers’ Youth civic association, a branch of the far right Workers’ Party (DS) that has narrowly escaped dissolution, the DS informed on its website today.

The Supreme Administrative Court on Wednesday turned down the government’s proposal for the dissolution of the DS saying that the proposal does not contain enough evidence to prove that the party harbours extremists and seeks the removal of democracy in the country, as the government asserted.

According to the DS, the new Workers’ Youth association is designed for young people aged from 15 to 35.

"The movement’s goal is to associate young Czech citizens on the basis of their adherence to social and national ideas and respect for the principle of life in a free society," the extremists said on their website.

According to them, the new association will organise social, cultural and sports activities.

The Czech opposition has blamed the government for the failed DS dissolution. It said the proposal for the DS’s dissolution was drafted badly and accused Interior Minister Ivan Langer (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) of being responsible for it.

Langer said, however, his ministry had drafted the proposal "very carefully and on the basis of its moral conscience and awareness" of the threatening danger the DS poses.

He said the NSS dealt with such a case for the first time and it had therefore only set certain limits within which the ministry would act in similar cases in the future.

"These criteria were never described in the past and it is important to us that the court has clearly defined them. We now know within which limits we should act in the future," Langer said.

The government has not yet said whether it intends to continue to seek the DS dissolution.
