Czech KDU-CSL deputy calls on minister Cunek to resign

Deputy chairman of the government coalition Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) deputies’ group Pavel Severa indicated today that he would welcome the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and KDU-CSL leader Jiri Cunek from his government posts.

Although Severa did not directly call on Cunek to resign, he told journalists that Cunek should take a "good step" as quickly as possible.

"I understand the disappointment of the Greens," Severa said when asked whether he understood the position of the governing party that would like Cunek to leave the government.

Severa also indicated that if Cunek failed to react to the criticism of his statements concerning Romanies he would consider remaining in the KDU-CSL.

I would have to re-consider "my position and my participation in the party," he said.

Severa said that he was not the only Christian Democrat to hold such a view.

Cunek today explained his statements about Romanies at a meeting of the party leadership and the leadership accepted his explanation.

Like in the case of the accusation of Cunek of bribe-taking, the party leadership backed Cunek.

Cunek confirmed that the coalition party leaders would discuss his statements about Romanies this evening but that he did not intend to resign.

Severa said that he was disappointed by the position adopted by the party leadership in the morning because he expected it to reflect the fact that not all the Christian Democrats have the same view on Cunek’s behaviour.
