Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Christian Democrat (KDU-CSL) chairman Jiri Cunek who is suspected of corruption and who has been recently criticised for his insulting statements about Romanies does not believe that Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) will dismiss him, he told the daily Pravo today.

"Any one-sided step would cause great complications, but I do not believe that the prime minister will do this," Cunek said.

Pravo wrote on Thursday that Topolanek intended to dismiss Cunek although the KDU-CSL leadership backed him at its meeting on Wednesday.

However, Topolanek has not officially confirmed his intention.

KDU-CSL deputy Jiri Carbol told Pravo today that if Topolanek dismissed Cunek it "would mean a one-sided abrogation of the coalition agreement because it would be an interference in the KDU-CSL’s sovereign decision."

Martin Bursik, chairman of the Green Party, the third member of the government coalition, said on Thursday that Cunek’s further remaining in the government posts might be a reason for the Greens to leave the coalition.

Bursik said he saw no other solution but Cunek’s departure.

The opposition also demands Cunek’s dismissal.
