Czech PM says Cunek's withdrawal would not threaten coalition

Not even Deputy PM Jiri Cunek’s possible withdrawal from the government would threaten the ruling coalition, PM Mirek Topolanek said on Czech Radio today, adding that the position of Cunek, head of the junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), is becoming more and more complicated.

The three coalition parties’ leaders are to discuss Cunek’s troubles tonight.

"Jiri Cunek’s position is becoming more and more complicated as he has not made it easier for either his party or his coalition partners," Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) said.

The police have accused Cunek of accepting a bribe worth 500,000 crowns from a real estate company in his capacity as mayor of Vsetin, north Moravia, in 2002.

Most recently, he has been criticised over his controversial statements on Romanies in the tabloid Blesk.

The KDU-CSL presidium discussed Cunek’s hints to the "sunburnt skin" and "making fires in the square" today and backed Cunek as party chairman.

Cunek, who is also local development minister, has repeatedly said he would not resign over the corruption accusations or his latest statements which he admitted, were rather unfortunate.

His statements on Romanies have been condemned by the junior ruling Greens (SZ), the ODS and the opposition. He also came under sharp criticism of President Vaclav Klaus and Romany activists have expressed their indignation as well.

The coalition leaders will discuss Cunek’s statements tonight. Topolanek indicated on Frekvence 1 radio that Cunek’s position will not be easy.

"There will definitely be pressure for his withdrawal. On the other hand, I say that a chance for his comeback must exist. I cannot anticipate the meeting’s result, but a strong pressure for his withdrawal will be exerted," Topolanek said on Frekvence 1 radio.

He said it is very difficult to defend Cunek now that he "has re-charged with his sharp statements."
