Czech policeman runs for nationalists in EP polls

Czech policeman Jaroslav Bernasek is running for the extra-parliamentary ultra-right National Party (NS) in the June EP elections, the daily Lidove noviny (LN) reports today.

The Police Presidium does not mind the policeman’s candidacy. It says this does not mean that he would work in favour of the party, LN writes.

Bernasek, a local councillor of a little town in central Bohemia, is not a member of the NS. He is just running for the party that has placed him as number nine on its list of candidates for the EP elections to be held in the Czech Republic on June 5-6, LN adds.

Bernasek claims he is not interested in the NS’s ideology.

"I have not taken part in any of their (NS) events, not to mention those that would be in conflict with my work as a policeman," LN quotes him as saying.

The NS has been active on the Czech political scene since 2002. It has criticised the EU and stood up against foreign inmigrants, Romanies as well as Islam in the long run.
