Czech Republic: False rumor spreading that Roma access local pool for free

As happens every summer in the Czech Republic, various towns are having to issue statements refuting the rumors that Romani people get free entry to local swimming pools because of their nationality. This year the lie is spreading in the town of Most.

Rumor has it that Romani people get free entry to the local Aquadrom. The town’s Technical Services department has now informed local residents and the media that this may be because it hires a large number of Romani people to run the recreation center.

"All of the employees of the Technical Services of the Town of Most and their immediate family members (children and spouses) can access the Aquadrom and other facilities owned by the company for free according to a collective bargaining agreement – they show an employee badge with a photograph for access. The badge authorizes their entry free of charge. However, all of the other services offered inside these facilities must be paid for by our employees the same as anyone else," reads a statement issued by the Technical Services of the Town of Most. "Technical Services is a big employer of citizens from the Romani community, and this may have created the erroneous impression that a certain group of citizens in town gets free entry to the Aquadrom only because of their nationality."
