Czech Republic: Zeman wins first round in some Romani neighborhoods

In the historically first direct election of the president in the Czech Republic, candidate Miloš Zeman won most of the votes cast at the Chanov housing estate in the town of Most. Voter turnout was extremely low, with only 59 voters casting ballots, a mere 6.43 % of those eligible.

Zeman was chosen by 44 voters at the Chanov housing estate, winning 75.57 % of the vote there. The Chanov voters’ second choice was Jan Fischer (13.55 %) and their third choice was Jiří Dienstbier (8.47 %). Candidates Přemysl Sobotka and Jana Bobošíková earned one vote each. Candidates Zuzana Roithová, Táňa Fischerová and Karel Schwarzenberg earned no votes. Schwarzenberg will face off against Zeman in the second round later this month.

In the town of Krupka, electoral districts where primarily Romani voters were registered also went for Zeman, who won more than 32 % of the vote. Second place there went to Jan Fischer with almost 19 % of the vote, third place to Jiří Dienstbier (17 %) and fourth place to Karel Schwarzenberg (15.1 %). Turnout there was also very low; electoral district 8 saw a 27.46 % turnout and electoral district 9 saw only a 21.8 % turnout.

Romani residents living in the neighborhood around Přednádraží street in Ostrava also did not turn out in large numbers for the presidential election. Electoral district no. 1 there saw only 123 people out of the 835 who were eligible go to the polls, a turnout of 14.73 %.

In the Předlice quarter of Ústí nad Labem the winner was Jan Fischer with more than 33 % of the vote. Zeman came in second place with 21.5 %, Dienstbier came in third with 18.5 %, and Schwarzenberg came in fourth at 13.4 %. Voter turnout in electoral district no. 14 there was a mere 16.34 %.

In Trmice, where there is a rather strong Romani community, Zeman won with not quite 28 % and Fischer came in second at 22.73 %. Overall turnout there was 43.08 %.

At the Janov housing estate in the town of Litvínov, Zeman won 31 % of the vote, followed by Fischer at 22.7 %, Dienstbier at 16.6 % and Schwarzenberg at 10.6 % of the vote. Turnout ranged from 20 to 36 percent in various electoral districts there.
