The Rokycany Town Hall plans to instal more camera-monitoring devices at the most problematic places in reaction to tension between Romanies and rightist extremists in the town, mayor Jan Baloun told CTK after a meeting with the police and Romany representatives today.

The Town Hall has also called on Romanies to attend meetings of the commission for crime prevention that are held by the police once a month.

Local Romanies have complained that they have been exposed to threats and attacks in Rokycany for a long time.

The town previously decided to reinforce state and municipal police patrols in the streets.

The Town Hall organised meetings with Romanies and the police in reaction to the situation in the town that escalated two weeks ago when a group of assaulters stormed a bar, popular among Romanies, attacking the waiters and several guests.

The police, however, today announced that the Romany woman who had reportedly been injured in the incident had fabricated the story.

The police did not prove that the attack was racially motivated, local police chief Josef Svoboda said.

Romanies reacted to the incident in the bar with a demonstration that was not officially announced beforehand.

Last Saturday skinhead supporters attempted to stage a similar rally, but the police prevented the plan.

Baloun also said the town had no problems with local Romanies, except for several families.

On the other hand, foreigners, who make up over one-tenth of inhabitants, that is some 1700, have started causing problems in Rokycany he added.
