Field social workers from the People in Need organisation will extend the extra classes provided to children from poor families in the town of Chomutov, the town’s Mayor Ivana Rapkova (Civic Democrats, ODS) told journalists today.

The children were taught at their homes, while now a centre was established so that more children can take part in the classes.

Rapkova said that without the supervision of the field workers a number of the parents would not send their children to school.

Field workers have operated in Chomutov for four years and most of their about 1000 clients live on the Dukelska street, majority of whom are Romanies.

Apart from tutoring, field workers offer free law consultations, assistance in dealing with the authorities, help in producing written documents, support in job seeking and receiving new qualification.

The field workers are in permanent contact with the local Romany community.
