Participants in a Romani youth conference in Strasbourg held a protest yesterday in front of the European Commission and the European Parliament responding to the rise in anti-Roma sentiment and violence against Roma across Europe, primarily in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Young Romani people called on the Council of Europe and the European Parliament to pay immediate attention to the rise in anti-Roma riots in these countries.

Roma Youth in Action

“This month there have been more than eight anti-Roma marches in the north of the Czech Republic,” the young Roma write in their declaration. “Slogans like ‘Gypsies to the gas chambers’ are being used there which are reminiscent of the Nazi persecution of the Jews and Roma.” The Romani youth also drew attention to the racially motivated murders of Romani people in Hungary and to the violations of Romani migrants’ human rights in France, Germany and Italy.

The conference was convened by the Council of Europe with the aim of creating an action plan targeting Romani youth. Those attending represented organizations from more than 17 European states. Members of the international youth networks FERYP, Pakiv and ternYpe predominated among those attending.

From the Czech Republic, Romani youth attending the conference were Michal Miko of the Slovo 21 association, Martin Grinvalský of Czech Television and Renáta Berkyová of the Open Society Fund Prague. Gabriela Hrabaňová, formerly director of the office of the Czech Government Inter-ministerial Commission for Roma Community Affairs, attended the conference on behalf of the ERGO Network, based in Brussels.
