Up to 70 people, including Řápková and Jančík, could lose their degrees

The Law Faculty in Plzeň has drawn up a list of approximately 70 people whose degrees it has decided to revoke. According to information published by the daily Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD), leading politicians and state officials are on the list. The investigating commission’s report implies that the Mayor of Chomutov, Ivana Řápková and the city manager for the Prague’s fifth district could be among those who will lose their Master’s degrees.

“We found that the people concerned did not complete their final state exams in a standard way; in three instances the entire course of their studies was not standard,” the report says. The investigating commission was led by Vice-Rector Eva Pasáčková.

Besides Jančík and Řápková, former deputy ministers Dana Trezziová, Robert Szurman and Ivo Vrzal could lose their degrees. However, all of them claim to have completed their studies properly. “Everything about my studies was in order, I am not afraid for my degree,” Jančík told the daily.

MfD reports that the commission has now unanimously stated for the first time that the studies completed by some of their graduates were not in order according to the faculty’s own documentation. The commission has therefore recommended the Law Faculty prepare to initiate administrative proceedings to have the degrees revoked. The rector will announce the proceedings.

“We will prepare proposals by 15 May for all the graduates for whom the commission has discovered serious deficiencies and recommended the initiation of proceedings,” Dean Jiří Pospíšil said. A proceedings, however, does not automatically mean those identified will lose their degrees. They will be allowed to rebut the charges and present evidence of their innocence. If they do not do so, the school will revoke their degrees, MfD reports.
