"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

Prague, 21.4.2009 11:11, (ROMEA)

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the flagrant and cowardly act to which a Romani family in Vítkov has fallen victim. As a result of an arson attack, three people were severely burned. A two-year-old child who suffered burns over 80 % of her body is fighting for her life.

Inertia on the part of the state and political representatives in this country has resulted in the growth of the extremist movement in the Czech Republic which we have witnessed in recent months. This movement is growing to include actions that bear the attributes of terrorism.

We call on the political representatives of the state, the Interior Ministry and particularly the Czech public to take a stand against this growing neo-Nazism and extremism in our country. Today the Roma are being targeted, but tomorrow it could be anyone.

We also call on citizens of Roma ethnicity to avoid open conflicts and to continue to resist the neo-Nazi provocation which we have had to openly face in recent months. We also recommend the immediate creation of citizen patrols to actively collaborate with local municipalities and the Czech Police. The aim of these patrols will not be to provoke violence, but to help us provide protection for our families.

The Roma in the Czech Republic are embittered by this arson attack and want to show their solidarity with the family. We are preparing a public collection for them and protest gatherings that will take the form of a "chain" demonstration.
