Greek police say they have prevented ultra-left bombing

The Associated Press reports that police in Greece say they have foiled a bombing allegedly planned by an ultra-left group for this weekend. Authorities say left-wing extremists wanted to attack the headquarters of the conservative New Democracy party, which is leading the current governing coalition.

Minister for Public Order and Citizen Protection Vasilis Kikilias said police discovered the conspiracy during a raid they conducted in Athens on Wednesday during which they arrested a person suspected of terrorist activity. Agence France-Presse reports three highly-placed officials were to have been assassinated during the attack:  The head of the Employers’ Association, the head of the Olympiakos Pireus football club, and the head of the Shipowners’ Association.

The country has suffered economic deprivation and for the time being has primarily experienced a rise in ultra-right opinions. Those opinions are reflected in the electoral success of Greek neo-Nazis, who run the third-strongest party in the country.

Left-wing extremism, however, has a longer tradition in Greece. Save for a period of suppression during a period of economic growth, the ultra-left was mainly active during the 20th century.

The 17 November Movement was the main representative of this trend, the members of which have been imprisoned in recent years. Several have managed to escape, however.
