Hospital apologizes for involuntary sterilization

On January 17, 2007, the High Court in Olomouc issued a ground-breaking verdict in the case of the illegal sterilization of Helena Ferenčíková in 2001 after the birth of her second child, requiring the hospital which performed the sterilization to apologize.
The High Court’s verdict upheld the November 2005 verdict of the Regional Court in Ostrava, but the court did not award Ms. Ferenčíková the compensation of CZK 1 million she sought for physical and psychological damages.

In a letter dated February 27, 2007, the Vítkovice Hospital has apologized to Ms. Ferenčíková for its “encroachment on […] your right to protection of personality […]”.
