Photo exhibition commemorates tragic fate of Romanies
According to the organisers, the goal of the Ma Bisteren! project is to contribute to the integration of Romanies with the majority society and present Romany history undistorted.
In 1940 the authorities of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia banned Romanies from leading a nomadic life. In 1942 a list of all Romanies was made that included 6,500 people. Some of them were deported to the Lety camp, south Bohemia, and others to the Hodonin camp, south Moravia.
According to historical documents, some 1,308 Romanies were deported to Lety during WW2, while 326 people perished there and more than 500 of its inmates ended up in the extermination camp in Auschwitz.
A similar internment was also in Hodonin, where 207 prisoners died and 800 were sent to Auschwitz. At present there is a recreational facility at the same place.
