ERIO calls for an ethical journalism free of stereotypes and prejudices

23 October 2013
1 minute read

The European Roma Information Office (ERIO)
is deeply concerned
with
and condemns
the
recent
media
coverage
of the
case of a Greek girl found in a Roma
camp
in Greece.
Media is reproducing negative
stereotypes and myths
of Roma reinforcing
prejudices that can
incite racism and
discrimination against
these communities.

“Roma are often portrayed in the media
in a stereotypical and
problematic
manner. Their portrayal is
regularly worsened when reported by sensationalist, unethical and unthinking
journalists,” said ERIO’s
Executive Director Ivan Ivanov.
“Biased and bigotry reporting can have harsh consequences on the daily
lives of the Roma communities
across Europe,” he added
.

We urge
media
representatives to embrace a reporting strategy that ensures
a
conscientious
ethical code
of conduct,
free
of stereotypes and prejudices in order to avoid any form of discriminatory
reporting.
Journalism should be
considered as a powerful tool for progressive change useful
to combat anti

Roma
prejudices and stereotypes instead of inciting them.
We urge civil society
organisations
to support
journalists
and editors
working on Roma related issues in order to comply wi
th ethics and values.
