Greeks remove triple jumper from Olympic team for racism
Paraskevi Papachristou has been removed from the Greek Olympic team because of racist remarks made on Twitter. Papchristou was the women's under-23 champion last year but is not competing in London because she made dishonorable remarks about African immigrants.
"With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes can at least get the same food they are used to at home," the 23-year-old athlete tweeted. Several people have recently fallen ill with West Nile virus in Greece.
Papachristou apologized for her remarks, explaining they were a joke, but her apology did not keep her from losing her opportunity to compete. "She showed she has no respect for basic Olympic values. She made a mistake, and we must pay for the mistakes we make in life," team captain Isidoros Kuvelos said.
