The project to support the Romani that should be active from next year in the Medjimurje County under the supervision of the European Commission and the Croatian cabinet, was presented today in front of the European Commission’s delegation.

The project is aimed at improving the life conditions of the Romani national minority in the settlement of Parag and in the municipality of Nedelisce in the Medjimurje County. The project was financed by the Phare 2005 programme, and by the state budget. The Medjimurje County ruler, Josip Posavec, expressed satisfaction with the project’s start.

The settlement of Parag solves the Romani’s main problems

Posavec stressed that the project’s incomes ran into a series of administration problems. However, with good cooperation between the county and the cabinet, these problems are under control.

According to Posavec, the construction of Parag should solve the Roma’s four biggest problems, which are: housing, health care, education and employment.

The cabinet’s vice-president and president of the Commission for the Supervision of the Implementation of the National Romani, Jadranka Kosor is very satisfied with the project. She thanked the European Commission and the head of its delegation in Croatia, Vincent Degert, for the support.

– This is a great day for the efforts of the local administration, the cabinet and the European Commission in the promotion of human rights and common battle to protect the Romani’s honour – said Kosor.

She praised the successful cooperation with the Medjimurje County in the achievement of concrete results. She added that Zagreb should do the same.

A member of the Romani Association of Croatia asked her when she intends to visit the Romani settlement of Struge near Zagreb which is in extremely bad conditions. Kosor reminded she has stopped by several times.

– Struge is also a problem of Zagreb, and since the attitude of Zagreb’s administration is stuck on dead points, we can not do much about it – Kosor stressed, adding that the cabinet has problems in the cooperation with Zagreb on the issue of the Romani life conditions.

Kosor wrote to Bandic, but she received no answer

Kosor stated that she wrote to Mayor Bandic several times to discuss the problems of Struge, but she never got an answer.

The head of the European Commission’s delegation, Vincent Degert, thanked the cabinet’s support to improve the Romani’s life standard. For what concerns the Parag settlement project, he stated that the stress has to be put on the education of the Romani community, in particular of the parents who have to understand that their children must attend the school.
