Protest At Czech Embassy Over Denial Of Roma Children’s Rights

27 October 2012
1 minute read

Five years ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Czech
Republic must end the segregration of Roma children into “special schools” where
education is said to be severely substandard.

The system has been condemned as a form of apartheid but despite pressure,
little or nothing has been done to change the situation. It leaves Roma ever
more marginalized and unable to catch up with the majority society.

In response to an appeal from Roma NGOs in Ostrava, where the test case
started, the 8 April Movement is holding a protest outside the Czech Embassy on
Tuesday, 13 November.

Participants – including chair of Euro-Roma Ladislav Baláž, a Roma civil
society activist from the Czech Republic – will gather at 12 noon at the Black
Lion Gate, Kensington Gardens, London (Tube: Queensway).

The protest is being coordinated with demonstrations the same day in Ostrava
and Prague.
