The Slovak Foreign Ministry today criticised Hungarian authorities for having made it possible for several hundred new members of the extremist Hungarian Guard to take their oath on Saturday, and called on European institutions to start to deal with the issue.

"There should be no room in democratic Europe for the manifestations of aggressive nationalism, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and neo-fascism. These phenomena cannot be relativised, marginalised, nor can they be justified in any way," the ministry says in a statement sent to CTK.

It says the guard is a threat to the inhabitants of Hungary and neighbouring countries, and it is also a challenge to Europe.

The Slovak Foreign Ministry reminds that the Hungarian guard is also hostile to Romanies.

A representative of the extra-parliamentary Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik) that founded the guard told several Slovak media on Saturday that the guard should strive for autonomy for the Hungarian minority in southern Slovakia.

The traditionally complex relations between Slovakia and Hungary were again complicated last week when the self-rule authority in Pilisszentkereszt decided to move the local Slovak organisations from the Slovak House.

The step taken in the municipality whose Slovak name is Mlynky and that is the sole in Hungary in which the Slovak population predominates, has drawn sharp criticism by Slovak politicians.

Slovak politicians criticised the Hungarian Guard in the past as well.

The guard was also condemned in the past by Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany.

A Hungarian court is currently proceeding a proposal to outlaw the guard.
