Two assailants who according to the police attacked last week a dark-skinned 16-year-old girl whose father is Cuban have been taken into custody, Kosice district court spokeswoman Marcela Galova has told CTK.

The accused have complained against the decision. The regional court will deal with the complaint, Galova added.

She said one of the attackers faces up to 12 years in prison, if found guilty, another one six years because he is juvenile.

Four young men aged 17 to 19 attacked the girl in Kosice, but only two of them allegedly kicked and beat her up.

The police say the attack was racially motivated.

The Kosice region police have registered this year five crimes in which the perpetrators were accused of extremism. During the whole year 2006 the police dealt with 15 cases of extremism manifestations.

Last week’s crime has been the most aggressive in the region. The girl suffered injuries to the head, the spine and the right arm.
