The opposition Socialist party has called on Hungary’s democratic political forces to distance themselves from a proposal by a radical nationalist Jobbik party politician to "banish Roma criminals" from the northeastern city of Miskolc.
Istvan Nyako, a spokesman for the Socialists, said on Wednesday that the party expected prime minister Viktor Orban to speak out in protection of Hungary’s Roma minority of about half a million people and reject extremism.
He said that in a society governed by rule of law, the place of recidivist criminals was in prison.
