US: Neo-Nazi demonstration prompts revulsion among local residents

News server www.southjerseylocalnews.com reports on recent dramatic events in Pemberton Borough, New Jersey. A group of 25 or more members of the National Socialist Movement (NSM), the largest neo-Nazi movement in the US, were meeting in a local club when members of the Anti-Racist Association (ARA) assembled outside and began shouting at the NSM members dining inside. The neo-Nazis left the club to confront them and a brawl began.

Borough police came to the scene but were outnumbered. State police then responded.

By the time the situation had calmed down, four neo-Nazis had been transferred to two nearby hospitals with light injuries and then released. Two ARA members were charged with resisting arrest.

The rest of the neo-Nazis then traveled to a hotel in nearby Bordentown under heavy police protection. The next morning they were escorted by police to the city of Trenton. Laden with American flags, including flags with swastikas superimposed over the stars and stripes, the neo-Nazis participated in a packed demonstration against high taxes and immigrants. Many of those demonstrating were dressed in World War II-replica German Army uniforms and armbands with swastikas. Once the demonstration ended, three neo-Nazis were arrested one for criminal mischief, one for failure to disperse, and one for possession of fireworks (disorderly conduct).

Once the public meeting was over, Trenton residents expressed strong disgust at the demonstration and neo-Nazi marches in general. Pemberton Borough Mayor William Kochersperger also told a reporter that the demonstration had prompted him to ask, “How could anyone still be attracted to such evil beliefs?”
