Visas may be restored for Western Balkans if Roma problem not solved

27 October 2012
1 minute read

The EU threatened to restore the visa regime for Serbia and four other
candidates for EU members if they do not solve the Roma problem. Sweden,
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands, signed a letter
insisting to restore visas for Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Albania, and FYROM, in a sign of protest against the growing number of
unsubstantiated refuge requests coming from these countries.

At the meeting of EU interior ministers they called for respecting the rights
of Roma citizens on the Balkans and an improvement of their living conditions.
The Trud daily quoted Doris Pack, European Parliament Rapporteur on Bosnia and
Herzegovina, as saying that the EU is currently lacking an instrument to
terminate the visa-free regime for Western European countries.
