Slovakia: Two-day meeting of V4 presidents was to cover Romani community issues, among other matters

15.10.2018 11:47 On 11 October a two-day meeting began in the High Tatras of Slovakia between the presidents of four Central European countries comprising the so-called Visegrád Four (V4). The traditional summit between the presidents of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia was hosted by Slovak President Andrej Kiska, whose country is now presiding over the V4.  full story

Slovakia: Girl from impoverished Romani family wins race running in flats

8.9.2018 7:08 Annamárie Horváthová, a pupil from an impoverished Romani family, has drawn attention and expressions of sympathy from the public in Slovakia after winning a race in which, unlike her competitors, she was wearing just flats. A co-organizer of the competition has found a sponsor who has now given the girl new running shoes and socks.  full story

Slovak President Kiska calls on voters to remove Fascists from office

5.9.2017 11:08 Slovak President Andrej Kiska gave a speech in Banská Bystrica last week to celebrate the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising in which he sharply objected to the ultra-right party "Ľudová strana Naše Slovensko Mariana Kotleby" (Marian Kotleba's People's Party Our Slovakia - LSNS), which holds seats in the national legislature and the governorship of the Banská Bystrica Region. "I believe it is our duty to do more than just commemorate the bravery of our forebears one day a year and lay flowers at the memorials to the fallen. At a time when Nazi and Fascist ideologies are growing unscrupulously in our country, it is not enough recall the past and to make speeches," he said.  full story

Slovak President Kiska: Let's stop speaking of the "Romani problem" and use Romani potential

18.6.2017 13:02 According to video footage released by his office, Slovak President Andrej Kiska presented his "Report on the State of the Republic" to the National Assembly on 14 June, assessing the state of the Slovak economy as positive and saying there is potential for Slovakia to further develop even as he criticized the state's inability to resolve its most burning issues, which causes growing mistrust among the citizenry in state institutions and representatives. The report, among other things, touches on the growth of extremist sentiment in society and the situation of Romani people in Slovakia.  full story

Slovak President Kiska visits anti-extremist event and Romani settlement on the same day

28.5.2017 12:12 "The failure to resolve Romani issues means it's smooth sailing for extremism, and that is the worst thing that can happen," Slovak President Andrej Kiska said according to news server aktuálně.atlas.sk during a visit to Spišské Podhradí on 22 May where, besides meeting with the town leadership, he also met with staffers of the education center Nano Nagle, which aids Romani children, and visited a Romani settlement in Roškovce. Slovak President vetoes law to end runoff voting for Regional Governors
