3.7.2020 10:58 The ROMEA organization held two online conferences, one about the phenomenon of antisemitism and one about the phenomenon of antigypsyism in the Internet environment and their historical roots, as part of the international project Remember and Act! (Re-ACT) together with the International Network Against Cyber Hate (INACH), LICRA and SYNYO. Both conferences and the subsequent specialized workshops were attended by roughly 40 experts from almost 20 countries worldwide, including Canada, Germany, Israel, Romania and Spain. Both events were organized as collaborations with the European Roma Grassroots Organisations network (ERGO).  full story

Czech Republic: Children's fight mischaracterized by media as "Roma gang violence"

16.10.2017 8:08 The Facebook social network has been circulating a video recording of an aggressive assault by a Romani youth on two schoolchildren in a park in the Czech town of Louny. The state police are investigating and have beefed up morning and afternoon patrols around schools there in collaboration with local police, and the Department of Social Affairs and Health Care of the local authority has also begun investigating.  full story

Commentary: Czech "hero" reports the racist news from a children's playground

Alliance against Antigypsyism: Antigypsyism is a major obstacle to equal citizenship for Romani people

19.7.2016 6:31 On 5 July the Alliance against Antigypsyism published its "Reference Paper on Antigypsyism", which is a specific form of racism against Roma, Sinti, Travellers and other groups stigmatized as "gypsies" in the public arena. The paper, among other things, proposes a working definition of the concept.

Czech report on extremism for last year: 307 events, anti-refugee protests replaced anti-Romani ones

Czech Human Rights Minister says USA's human rights report about the Czech Republic is correct and factual

15.4.2016 15:13 Czech Human Rights Minister Jiří Dienstbier (Czech Social Democratic Party - ČSSD) says the report issued by the US State Department on the state of human rights in the Czech Republic is correct and factual. In the document, which the American authorities publish annually, reservations were expressed regarding the situation of Romani people and the remarks made by political representatives about the migration crisis, including remarks made by Czech President Miloš Zeman.  full story

Czech Constitutional Court rejects complaint from convener of banned anti-Romani assembly

21.11.2015 17:06 Local authorities did not make an error when they banned an assembly and march in the town of České Budějovice in 2013 out of concerns over extremism. The Czech News Agency has ascertained from the database of the findings and rulings of the Constitutional Court (Ústavní soud - ÚS) that it has rejected a complaint filed against that decision by the convener of the assembly, Pavel Matějný.  full story

Survey shows Czechs are the least tolerant in EU toward blacks, Buddhists, Muslims, Roma

Vice-Mayor of Czech Republic's second-largest city calls xenophobia the national hobby

6.10.2015 6:06 Brno Vice-Mayor Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno - Live Brno) has engaged in a sharp exchange with South Moravian Governor Michal Hašek over comments Hollan made about xenophobia in Czech society. "[During the Holocaust] there was majority-Czech anti-Semitism, which we love to forget about today, and the anti-Gypsyism of that time, which a big segment of society dismisses today, because to this day verbally sending 'Gypsies' to the gas chambers is the national hobby. These are modes of behavior and thought that are deeply rooted among the Czech public. Reading the debates today about Muslim refugees is essentially absolutely the same as reading the remarks that used to be made about the Jewish refugees. Back then the Jews (and the 'Gypsies') were to blame for everything, and today it's the Muslims (and the 'Gypsies')," Hollan wrote.  full story

22.9.2015 17:26 At 15:12 CET today the Czech edition of news server Romea.cz reported that the German-language pages of the Zazzle online retailer were offering a T-shirt reading "GYPSY HUNTER BADGE - WE KILL THE GYPSIES". Zazzle is one of the biggest, must progressive firms in its field, offering customers the opportunity to create their own logos for placement on T-shirts or other items and then to sell their creations through the firm's online store.  full story

Commentary: Correct language in the USA isn't sparing anyone's life

27.8.2015 19:48 Neither a correct nor a "hypercorrect" vocabulary, in and of itself, is enough to get rid of any problem. Petra Gelbart, who has commented on her shock that the Prague Transit Authority is telling its passengers "amusing" anecdotes about the history of the slang expressions used by drivers, certainly knows this.  full story
