Canada grants asylum to former MEP who faced death threats in Hungary due to her Romani origin

16.5.2018 17:53 Viktória Mohácsi, a Romani activist and former MEP from Hungary, has finally been awarded political asylum in Canada. She requested asylum in 2012 after seeking police protection over death threats she received upon returning to Hungary when her EP mandate was over.

New Zealand grants asylum to family from Czech Republic with non-Romani and Romani members because of neo-Nazi death threats

29.1.2018 18:24 Radio New Zealand reported today that a woman and her three sons have been awarded political asylum in New Zealand because they faced death threats from neo-Nazis in their home country of the Czech Republic. The father of two of the boys is Romani, their adopted brother is also Romani, and according to their mother, who is not Romani, her children have faced, among other things, discrimination in education because of their ethnicity.  full story

Germany: Roma at risk of being returned to the Balkans continue to protest

11.6.2016 8:27 "Solidarity with Romani people expelled from the memorial dedicated to the Sinti and Roma murdered during Nazism" - under that slogan a demonstration was held on 3 June on the Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The plan was to occupy the memorial to the Roma Holocaust in the Tiergarten near the neighborhood in the German capital that houses all of the government offices.  full story

Germany sends Christian refugees back to Czech Republic for deportation to Iraq

4.4.2016 0:51 A group of 25 Iraqi refugees who have been living temporarily at the Okrouhlík center near Jihlava in the Czech Republic refused that country's offer of asylum and asked for their passports to be returned to them on Friday. They spent the night at a residential hotel elsewhere in Jihlava before chartering a bus on Saturday and traveling to the German town of Essen.  full story

German state of Bavaria prepares to sue federal government over alleged mishandling of the refugee crisis

4.11.2015 22:39 The German daily Tagesspiegel reports that the German state of Bavaria is preparing a Constitutional complaint against the German Government over the current influx of refugees into the country. The country's largest state is of the opinion that the federal government is not meeting its obligations during the refugee crisis by not attempting to restrict the arrival of immigrants to the country.  full story

Czech Government grants asylum to 15 families from Syria

Prague, 15.1.2015 0:21, (ROMEA) The Czech Government has agreed to grant asylum to refugees from Syria. Czech Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Bělobrádek (Christian Democrats - KDU-ČSL) announced the decision on Twitter on 14 January.  full story

German authorities reject award-winning Bosnian Romani man's asylum request

Berlin, Germany, 7.2.2014 0:32, (ROMEA) Nazif Mujić, a Romani man from Bosnia, was the star of last year's Berlinale film festival, winning the Silver Bear for Best Actor for his performance in the docudrama "An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker". As of the end of last month, he and his family were living in a residential hotel for refugees on the outskirts of Berlin and waiting to learn whether they would have to leave Germany against their will.  full story

Kosovo: Romani family deported from France were assaulted today

France, 22.10.2013 1:14, (ROMEA) On 21 October French President François Hollande became the target of criticism from both the left and the right over his recent offer to allow a Romani girl deported under controversial circumstances to return to France alone, without the rest of her family. According to polls published that same day, Hollande's popularity has fallen to its lowest level since taking office.  full story
