Czech Internet users celebrate the deaths of migrant children in Turkey

17.10.2018 9:44 Turkey's state wire service Anadolu reported the deaths of at least 22 migrants, including children, during a traffic accident in the west of the country on Sunday, 14 October. According to photographs taken at the accident scene, a truck which was apparently transporting the migrants broke through traffic barriers and dropped from the highway into an irrigation canal below.  full story

26.9.2018 20:08 The Ústecký Parliament of Children and Youth (ÚPDM) is holding an event today entitled "Political Debate with Representatives of All Parties Running Locally" as part of a project called "Young People Vote". Tomáš Vandas, the candidate invited to represent the "Clean Ústí" movement, is also the co-founder of the ultra-right Workers' Party (DS), which was dissolved by the Supreme Administrative Court in 2010, and is still chair of its successor party, the current Workers' Social Justice Party (DSSS).  full story

Public discussion reviews Czech and Slovak policies and practices of commemorating the Holocaust and its Romani victims

24.5.2018 8:12 ROMEA o.p.s. in collaboration with the Prague Forum for Romani Histories at the Czech Academy of Sciences‘ Institute for Contemporary History, the Museum of Romani Culture (MRC) and the Romani Studies Seminar at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University has just held the third in their series of public debates on the occasion of the state buying out the pig farm facility in Lety u Písku because of its location on a genocide site. The panel discussion, "Holocaust of the Roma: Contemporary Research in Czechoslovak Context" was attended by almost 60 people and took place in the unique venue that is Kampus Hybernská, a joint project of the City of Prague and the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.  full story

Czech memorial to Romani genocide apparently must be done in three years

28.4.2018 17:51 On Wednesday 18 April at Gallery VI PER in Prague a discussion was held about the process through which the new Lety u Písku memorial is to be created, its possible forms, and the role it should serve. The public debate about these various aspects of memorial creation was enriched by the opinions of the artist Pavel Sterec from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno Technical University, the art critic and historian Anežka Bartlová from the College of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM), and the editor and historian Čeněk Pýcha from the Education Department of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR).

Demolition of pig farm on Romani genocide site in Czech Republic could provide jobs for long-term unemployed

28.4.2018 9:31 On Wednesday, 25 April yet another in the series of discussions on the future of the former camp at Lety u Písku that has been organized by the Museum of Romani Culture and the ROMEA organization was held. This time the discussion happened directly in the community of Lety u Písku in the local authority's auditorium and, as moderator Alica Sigmund Heráková said, it came "not just to the place about which there is discussion, but also to the local reality, the local residents, and the region where the changes related to building the memorial will have the most impact."  full story

Czech Republic will not finance new memorial at Romani genocide site, funds will come from Norway

26.4.2018 11:58 The new memorial to the Holocaust and its Romani victims at the site of the former concentration camp for Romani people in Lety u Písku will not be paid for by the Czech state. At a public meeting in Lety yesterday held by the Museum of Romani Culture and the ROMEA organization, Czech Deputy Culture Minister René Schreier delivered that message.  full story

23.2.2018 14:16 The Museum of Romani Culture, s.p.o., and ROMEA o.p.s. are holding a public discussion next week on the future possible form and role of the Lety u Písku memorial called "Restoring Dignity to the Remembrance Site at Lety u Písku". The debate follows on from a meeting held by the Lety Platform working group initiated by the Institute of the Terezín Initiative and the Museum of Romani Culture and will endeavor to further develop dialogue among victims' relatives, historians, the relevant institutions and members of the public who are interested in Lety u Písku as a remembrance site and symbol in the Czech Republic of the recognition of the Holocaust of the Roma.  full story

Czech round table on Romani genocide memorial: Relatives of victims must have the last word

2.2.2018 19:36 Almost 30 people from various fields gathered on 26 January 2018 at the invitation of the Terezín Initiative Institute and the Museum of Romani Culture for a round table at the Institute's headquarters in the building of the former Jewish school on Jáchymova Street in Prague to discuss the possible creation of a Lety Platform that would, as a working group, discuss the form of the future remembrance site at Lety u Písku. In addition to representatives of both institutions (historians and professional staff) representatives of the Office of the Government, the Czech Government Council for Romani Minority Affairs, the Czech Culture Ministry, activists and naturally the relatives of the victims of the camp at Lety and the camp at Hodonín u Kunštátu sat at the same table to discuss the future of the memorials.  full story

International Czech and Slovak Romani community rocked by mysterious death of nine-year-old girl in England

10.1.2018 10:16 Romani community members have been using Facebook to vigorously discuss the mysterious death of a nine-year-old girl named Janička who, on 2 January 2018, is said to have died of suffocation while playing in her room. Allegedly she remained lifeless for 40 minutes before medical aid was given to her.  full story
