Czech center-right party distances itself from collaborating with extremists in local government

27.10.2018 17:18 A coalition agreement was signed on Monday, 22 October in the town of Duchcov (Teplice district) by representatives of the locally victorious Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) with the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM), the extremist Workers Social Justice Party (DSSS) and the "We Live in Duchcov" (Žijeme Duchcovem) group, which is comprised of independent candidates and the center-right TOP 09 party. Jindřich Svoboda, chair of the DSSS cell in Duchcov, will now begin his second term as a local councilor there.  full story

Czech Police stop Romani barbecue to enforce local ordinance - even where it does not apply

26.10.2015 8:09 Roughly 20 to 30 Romani people, most of them minors, gathered for a picnic at a park in Duchcov last month as part of a gathering organized by the Romane Kale Panthera (Romani Black Panther) group as a provocation. A local ordinance in Duchcov bans sitting outdoors in some parts of town and is obviously intended to target local Roma.  full story

Another Czech school segregating Romani children this year

11.9.2015 1:50 On 1 September the parents of some of the first-graders at the Antonín Sochor Primary School in the Czech town of Duchcov found an unpleasant surprise awaited them. The first grade class identified as "1A" includes all of the newly-enrolled Romani children, while class "1B" next door has been reserved exclusively for the children of local non-Roma.  full story

Czech Constitutional Court says MP's anti-Romani remarks not covered by immunity

25.6.2015 17:01 The Czech Constitutional Court (Ústavní soud - ÚS) has rejected a complaint filed by former MP Otto Chaloupka demanding immunity from prosecution. Last year the Czech Supreme Court rejected his appeal after he was given a suspended six-month sentence and put on probation for one year because of hateful remarks about Romani people that he posted to the Facebook social networking site.  full story

Czech Republic: Interview with Romani resident of town that has banned sitting outdoors

Czech SocDems get new leadership in region to address local coalition with extremists

Czech Communists call on their people in Duchcov to end governing coalition with ultra-right

Duchcov/Prague, 15.12.2014 19:02, (ROMEA) The chair of the Ústí Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) said Saturday that he will once again appeal to politicians in Duchcov elected for the party not to form a governing coalition with the right-wing extremist Workers' Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti - DSSS). Duchcov/Prague, 13.12.2014 20:04, (ROMEA) The Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) closed its local cell in Duchcov today after its members there formed a local coalition government with the right-wing extremist Workers' Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti - DSSS). Regional SocDems ok local coalition with ultra-right, Czech PM insists local cell must close

Ústí nad Labem, 24.11.2014 23:23, (ROMEA) The Ústí Regional leadership of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) has not closed the Duchcov cell of the party over its coalition with the ultra-right Workers Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti - DSSS) and has also not expelled any of its members involved. Czech ombud says her deputy's article was totally out of line

Brno, 1.10.2014 18:15, (ROMEA) Anna Šabatová, the Czech Public Defender of Rights (the ombud) has sharply criticized her deputy, Stanislav Křeček, for authoring an article critiquing the work of the Czech Government Agency for Social Inclusion. "[Mr Křeček's article] contravenes all of the principles of the work of the ombud, which are to maintain competence and confidentiality, to have a thorough knowledge of all the circumstances of a case, to listen to the other side, and what is most important, to propose measures for improving a situation should it be unsatisfactory," she has written in the daily Lidové noviny, which published Křeček's critique.  full story

Czech town bans outdoor screening of film in which Roma resident performs

Duchcov, 26.6.2014 20:27, (ROMEA) The Aerofilms distribution company is cooperating with the Czech Government Agency for Social Inclusion to screen the film "Cesta ven" (The Way Out) in 10 towns that have problems with excluded localities. In Duchcov the film was meant to be screened outdoors in a public space in the southern part of town which is mostly inhabited by Romani people.  full story

Czech Human Rights Minister: Communication not working in Duchcov

Duchcov, 19.5.2014 22:13, (ROMEA) Czech Minister for Human Rights, Equal Opportunities and Legislation Jiří Dienstbier (Czech Social Democrats - ČSSD) says the problem of the northern Bohemian town of Duchcov, where last year's attack on a married couple sparked anti-Romani sentiment, is the difficult communication between a local nonprofit organization and the town hall.
