Czech lower courts consider online comment calling for asylum-seekers to be set on fire a misdemeanor, Supreme Court to rule now

31.10.2018 10:23 Supreme State Prosecutor Pavel Zeman is insisting that the woman who posted on Facebook that a bus carrying asylum-seekers be set on fire should be punished by the courts for having committed a felony. The lower courts in Plzeň have sent the case to the local authority for handling as a misdemeanor.  full story

Facebook blocks German-language pages of anti-multiculturalism "Identitarian Movement"

Czech attorney: Justice for online hate has been won in a case of racist assaults against two Romani brothers

14.1.2018 8:36 The District Court in Prostějov, Czech Republic has given a suspended sentence to a perpetrator of online assaults against Patrik and Radek Banga, who have also been awarded compensation for the non-pecuniary damages they suffered in the full amount requested. Czech Police charge man who urged daughter to practice beating Muslims or Romani people with a baseball bat

17.9.2017 17:51 Czech Police have charged a man who was filmed urging his young daughter to use a baseball bat to hit a pillow while imagining it was a "Muslim or a Gypsy". The video was first reported on by news server Romea.cz after a Facebook user nicknamed Olloph Samorost posted it to his profile at the beginning of August.  full story

Romani singer received thousands of hateful verbal assaults, Czech Police charging two people

1.8.2017 16:48 News server Lidovky.cz reports that the Czech Police have discovered the identities of just two of the aggressors who sent thousands of racist messages to the Romani singer Radek Banga after he publicly protested a pop music award given to the hate-inciting Ortel band. The police announcement was made eight months from the moment he received his first hate mail.

Czech MP posts racial slurs online to "test" public response, then says "just kidding"

It's the dirty gyppos who bother me," former journalist and Czech MP Martin Komárek (ANO) posted to his Facebook profile on Saturday evening. Finland investigating racist commentaries shared on Facebook by police officers

7.6.2017 10:51 Police officers in Finland may face criminal prosecution over racist commentaries about immigrants that they posted to a closed Facebook group after the Finnish investigative news server Long Play discovered the commentaries and reported on them. Czech news server denik.cz cites the BBC as reporting that the Finnish National Police Council has submitted material to the prosecutor on the issue.  full story

Facebook blocks fascist party's official profile, including Slovak politician's personal page

24.4.2017 6:47 At the start of April the Facebook social network began blocking the official profile of the fascist party called "Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia" (Kotleba –Ľudová strana Naše Slovensko) and several other pages administered by its supporters, including the profile of party chair Marián Kotleba. Other blocked Facebook pages include, for example, the profile of Slovak MP Milan Mazurek, who is the vice-chair of the ĽSNS, and Milan Uhrík, the probable candidate for the party in Nitra, where he plans to run for Regional Governor.  full story

The threats of physical annihilation and calls to "gas" Banga began to appear on his Facebook profile after he publicly criticized the success of the xenophobic band Ortel in the "Czech Nightingale" music competition.  full story

Facebook wants to combat online hoaxes through expert fact-checking

16.12.2016 21:50 The Facebook social networking site is designing many instruments for preventing the dissemination of fake news or hoaxes, according to company vice-president John Hegeman, who announced the decision in New York. Facebook users will have the option of flagging untrue news items more easily than they do now, and facts that are called into question will then be verified by teams of experts including the ABC News television station in the USA and the Associated Press wire service.  full story
