International journalism conference: Media consumers today are more like sports fans

5.10.2018 8:25 The modern hall of the library at the University of Warsaw is full; approximately 150 journalists from 28 countries are sitting here and their debate confirms that many of the problems both journalism and society are currently undergoing are similar whether one is the eastern or the western parts of Europe. The only Czech participant there is the HlídacíPes.org ("Watchdog") media outlet, a partner of the conference put together by the German organization "N-ost".  full story

Czech Interior Minister says MP is lying about foreign nationals voting

17.7.2018 13:17 Czech MP Tomio Okamura (SPD), the vice-chair of the lower house and chair of the populist, xenophobic SPD party, announced on his official Facebook profile on Sunday that "Foreigners without Czech citizenship will newly be able to vote in the Czech Republic and run for office!" He also accused the new Czech Interior Minister Jan Hamáček of having instituted the measures immediately upon taking office.  full story

Czech politician spreads hateful racist hoaxes online against dark-skinned footballers, Muslims and Roma

16.7.2018 6:32 The Czech daily Právo reported on 10 July that Dominik Hanko, chair of the Ústecký Regional Authority's Committee for Social Affairs, Security and Socially Excluded Localities and vice-chair of the "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) party there, recently posted to social media the allegation that "Pensions for the unemployed are calculated based on the average wage. Czech party alleges ROMEA calls for violence online - but the posts are by their own ultra-right fans

23.12.2017 16:02 The "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) movement, headed by Czech MP Tomio Okamura, has made three separate accusations over the past week against the ROMEA organization. The movement's Vice-Chair, Radim Fiala, has quoted from some posts to online social networks about last weekend's conference in Prague of parties in the "Europe of Nations and Freedom" faction at the European Parliament, whose programs are anti-immigration, hateful, and xenophobic, alleging that ROMEA's Facebook page was used to call for people to bring "machetes" to the demonstration against the SPD and its European partners.  full story

YouTube wants to combat disinformation and hatred, hiring thousands to remove harmful content

Another Czech-language Internet hoax gives false, sectarian, xenophobic interpretation to video of riot

23.11.2017 10:16 A video has been shared almost 1 500 times by the Facebook page "Evropa-Evropanům" ("Europe for Europeans") and viewed by more than 80 000 unique users featuring scenes of violence on the streets of Brussels. The page is alleging the footage is of refugees attacking police, breaking in shop windows and destroying Christmas decorations.  full story

Czech Internet parody about Roma allegedly getting free butter backfires - online hysteria as thousands believe it

12.10.2017 9:37 In recent weeks the Facebook social networking site has been disseminating an avalanche of Czech-language rumors alleging that Romani people do not have to pay for butter. The initial allegation read as follows: "I was in a shop to buy my children salami, spreadable cheese, etc. The minority were ahead of me, they chose some butter and then they got out a paper from the social welfare office... the sales clerk confirmed it for them and they left. I asked what it was and she told me they are socially vulnerable so the state pays for their butter."  full story
