Czech Human Rights Minister says Govt will sign contract to buy pig farm on Roma genocide site next week

10.9.2017 10:05 The Czech Government will sign a contract with the AGPI firm next week to buy the pig farm in Lety u Písku that stands on the site of a former Protectorate-era concentration camp for Romani people. It will take at least half a year before the farm will be actually handed over to the state.  full story

8.8.2017 8:25 The anniversary of Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, which commemorates the unprecedented event of the murder of all prisoners of the so-called "Gypsy camp" at Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of 2 August and early morning of 3 August 1944, was marked this year by Czech Culture Minister Daniel Herman through a video message. "We are remembering the victims of the murder of the Romani family camp at Auschwitz," he said, adding that this year he would not be able to attend commemorative events in the Czech Republic due to work obligations outside the country.  full story

Czech company accepts state offer to buy pig farm on Roma genocide site

International Roma flag to fly on buildings throughout Czech Republic tomorrow for Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day

1.8.2017 18:38 Buildings in Brno, Ostrava, Prague and Ústí nad Labem will fly the international Roma flag tomorrow at noon to commemorate the tragic night of 2 August and early morning of 3 August when the Nazis murdered the last prisoners in the so-called Gypsy Family Camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in the gas chambers. During the 17 months of the camp's existence from February 1943 to July 1944 there were a total of 23 000 Romani children, men and women imprisoned in that particular camp.  full story

31.7.2017 10:28 Czech Radio's Radiožurnál station reports that the AGPI agricultural company has held its general meeting and agreed to transfer the pig farm at Lety to the Czech state. The firm has not announced the price.  full story

Czech-Roma group alleges more people may have died at Roma genocide site than previously known, will demonstrate for pig farm removal

21.7.2017 8:28 On Sunday, 30 July at 13:30 an assembly will be held on Hradčanské náměstí near Prague Castle called "Remove the pig farm! Remember the victims of the Samudaripen".
The main demand of those demonstrating is the removal of the pig farm from the site of the WWII-era genocide of the Roma at Lety u Písku.  full story

Karel Holomek: Czech President's proposal to leave pig farm on genocide site is out of touch

13.7.2017 17:34 On 24 June, at the site of the former concentration camp for Romani people at Lety u Písku, representatives of Romani people from all over Europe assembled, supported by many official European actors in a group reportedly totalling at least 300 people. The initiators of the protest against the pig farm on that site were not Czech Roma, although members of Czech Romani communities did attend the gathering.  full story

Czech Republic: Conference begins in Prague today about historical experience of Romani people as Holocaust victims

11.5.2017 9:12 The Terezín Initiative, the ROMEA organization and the Antikomplex movement are opening a three-day international conference today on the identity of European Roma in the 20th century in light of efforts to document Romani victims of the Holocaust, the aim of which is to look at the history of the 20th century through the historical experience of the Roma as one of the minorities affected by the Holocaust. The conference will open in Prague and close with a visit to the former concentration camp for Romani people at Lety u Písku on Saturday, 13 May, as part of the annual commemoration there.  full story

25.4.2017 7:10 The Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust (Výbor pro odškodnění romského holocaustu - VPORH) has designed a travelling exhibition called "A Vanished World"
(Zaniklý svět), about the indigenous Czech Roma and Sinti who perished during the Holocaust, which now will be on view in several locations throughout Prague from April through October. Using rare archival materials and photographs, the exhibition presents the life of Roma and Sinti in the Czech lands prior to their imprisonment in the Nazi concentration camps.

WWII-era letters from Prague by relatives of former US ambassador describe the advancing Holocaust

20.4.2017 11:12 A book of letters describing the onset of the Holocaust and the gradual introduction of prohibitions for the Jewish population of Prague was launched yesterday at the Lucerna Palace by the editors together with former US Ambassador to the Czech Republic Andrew Schapiro. The letters were written from 1939 through 1941 by his family members, who remained behind in occupied Prague, to their adult children who had managed to move to the USA.  full story

DEADLINE 26 APRIL: Int'l conference 11-13 May on "European Roma Identity in the 20th Century in Light of Documenting Holocaust Victims"

20.4.2017 6:56 The Antikomplex organization and the Terezín Initiative Institute in collaboration with the ROMEA organization and other partners, will be holding an international conference from 11 - 13 May in Prague and at Lety u Písku, Czech Republic during which experts on the documentation of Holocaust victims and modern history in the Central European area will discuss the current state of research in the field of the Romani Holocaust and their experiences with documenting Holocaust victims in general. The expert conclusions of the first day of the conference will be further discussed with members of the public during the second day, and based on those discussions, the experts will subsequently have the opportunity to jointly form an expanded version of existing recommendations to improve the situation not just in the area of the documentation of and research into the Romani Holocaust, but also for improving the fields of education, information, and the social situation of the Romani community in the Czech Republic and other European countries.  full story
