Europe: Activists plan campaign against the use of racism to get votes

Prague, 1.10.2013 23:55, (ROMEA) The international network United for Intercultural Action (UIA) wants to prevent the use of racism and xenophobia in the elections to the European Parliament next year. The group is planning to organize a campaign to prevent politicians from winning votes through slogans and suggestions that are anti-foreigner and anti-minority.  full story

Czech Republic: First two charges filed over violence in České Budějovice, experts fear more violence ahead

České Budějovice/Praha, 11.7.2013 3:04, (ROMEA) Two men who participated in recent unannounced demonstrations at the Máj housing estate have been delivered a ruling informing them that criminal proceedings have begun against them, the Czech Police report on their website. Experts are warning against violence linked with right-wing extremists who are organizing demonstrations there similar to those that have happened in North Bohemia in previous years.  full story

Norwegian MP tars Bulgarian, French and Romani people with the same brush

Oslo, Norway, 8.5.2013 15:27, (ROMEA) Agence France-Presse reported on Friday, 3 May that an MP with the second-strongest party in the Norwegian Parliament, the populist “Progress Party”, has called for the monarchy to close its borders to “organized groups of Roma, Bulgarians and Frenchmen”, labeling them notorious criminals. MP Per Sandberg, whose party scores political points through its anti-immigrant rhetoric in particular, proposed taking “three immediate steps to stop the influx of beggars and criminals” into the country.  full story

Czech EdMin: "Practical primary schools" will not be closed

Prague, 22.3.2013 15:19, (ROMEA) Speaking today in the Senate, Czech Education Minister Petr Fiala said the "practical primary schools" will not be closed. Nevertheless, he said that because of a judgment from the European Court of Human Rights, it is essential to change the fact that some pupils end up in these schools only because they come from socially disadvantaged environments or even because of their ethnic background.  full story

Commentary: Czech Residency Bans will solve nothing

Litvínov, 29.1.2013 0:43, (ROMEA) Almost anything at all can be imagined as falling under the concept of democracy, and many of us are somehow prevented from understanding what kind of power we all acquired here in November 1989. Most of us have a basic problem with the very definition of democracy. It is, therefore, easily understandable why today's functionaries do not have to distance themselves from previous totalitarian practices, which seem democratic and excusable to us today, at least under their definition of democracy. The truth is that the achievement of real democracy is very complex, and navigating it is too complicated. Our society is not prepared for complications - or better said, it is not capable of compromise.  full story

Analysis: Kristallnacht and its connection to Europe today

Prague, 9.11.2012 20:03, (ROMEA) During the late night hours of 9 November and the early morning hours of 10 November 1938, the Nazis in occupied Austria, the occupied border region of the Czech lands, and Germany murdered Jewish people and captured them for the concentration camps. A total of 267 synagogues were burned down or otherwise demolished, 7 500 Jewish apartments and shops were ransacked, 91 Jewish people were directly murdered during the pogrom, and 30 000 ended up in death camps.  full story
