9.4.2018 14:57 On 4 April the Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem began to hear the case of last year's murder at a housing estate in Chomutov. Petr Benda (age 37) faces up to 20 years in prison and has been charged with firing his weapon 13 times at a van being driven by Radek Š.  full story

Czech Republic: Romani boy assaulted on bus by ticket-checker gives interview to Romea.cz

19.1.2018 8:38 Reporters for news server Romea.cz have interviewed the boy whom a ticket-checker working for public transit used force against last week when she attempted to remove him from the morning commute to school, and we have interviewed his mother and another youth who filmed the incident on his mobile phone. The boy alleges that when he got onto the bus with his friends he could already hear the ticket-checker shouting at other children on the bus.

Czech city's transit authority admits ticket-checker should not have touched Romani child but otherwise backs her

13.1.2018 11:48 The transit authority of the City of Ústí nad Labem (DPMUL) issued a press release yesterday acknowledging that their ticket-checker was not authorized to grab a boy's hand while doing her job on one of the city buses recently. However, the DPMUL is alleging that the boy was vulgar to her and refused to take his backpack off, so they are standing by their employee in the matter.  full story

Serbia: Romani couple allege police beat them and forced them to confess to insurance fraud after their car was stolen

18.5.2027 19:22 The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) in Budapest reports that a married Romani couple was allegedly assaulted during a police interrogation after they called to report their automobile had been stolen. Serbian Police officers are alleged to have detained the couple for 13 hours.  full story

Czech NGO report finds Muslims and Roma most frequent victims of hate violence

Canadian Muslims condemn Islamist radical violence, now face increased aggression themselves

Ottawa, 4.11.2014 1:29, (ROMEA) After two recent attacks reportedly committed by Islamists in Canada, the number of attempted attacks against members of the Muslim community has risen sharply. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) announced the increase last Thursday.  full story

Czech Republic: Trial begins of incident that sparked anti-Romani unrest last year

Ústí nad Labem, 17.2.2014 19:56, (ROMEA) The Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem will begin reviewing the case of a brutal assault in the town of Duchcov (Teplice district) tomorrow. Czech Police need help identifying Romani assault victim

České Budějovice, 10.12.2013 3:15, (ROMEA) Police in České Budějovice are requesting assistance with an unusual search - they need to identify not a perpetrator, but a victim who was brutally assaulted by a violent youth this past summer on Piaristické Square. Hungary: Court in Budapest punishes racist murders with three life sentences, fourth perpetrator gets 13 years

Budapest, Hungary, 6.8.2013 23:48, (ROMEA) Today a Hungarian court handed down three life sentences for anti-Romani attacks during which six Romani people were murdered in 2008 and 2009. Five more people were seriously injured during the incidents and dozens suffered less serious injuries.  full story

Slovakia: Romani home targeted by machine gun fire, no injuries

Šaľa, Slovakia, 1.8.2013 21:36, (ROMEA) Yesterday assailants who have yet to be identified shot 22 bullets from a machine gun at a Romani home in the village of Hornej Kráľovej u Šali in Slovakia. The Markíza television station reported that at approximately 3 AM two cars pulled up in front of the building and several angry men reportedly shouted "Come out you dirty Gypsies!" at the Romani occupants of the home.  full story

České Budějovice, 29.6.2013 20:19, (ROMEA) Roughly 200 people, most of them Romani, gathered after 13:00 CET today at the Máj housing estate in České Budějovice where the assembly and cultural program "Čikhatar Het/Z bahna ven II" ("Out of the Mud II") was held by the Konexe civic association together with the local Romani community. The gathering was in response to an anti-Romani demonstration that started at 16:00 CET on Přemysl Otakar II Square and was attended by about 500 people.  full story

Duchcov, 22.6.2013 19:34, (ROMEA) In the Czech town of Duchcov (Teplice district) the first clashes have taken place between riot police and promoters of the Workers Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti - DSSS). Bottles and rocks were thrown and police used firecrackers, tear gas and water cannon. Police have confirmed two officers injured, but others have sustained bloody cuts. A photographer was struck in the head with a rock and a woman also suffered injuries. The right-wing radical event completely lost any sort of organized progression.  full story

Czech Republic: Media blow yet another incident of interethnic violence out of proportion

Prague, 20.6.2013 1:06, (ROMEA) According to reports by some Czech media outlets and the responses to them in online discussions, it might seem as if multiple murders had just been committed in the Krásné Březno quarter of Ústí nad Labem. However, according to reporting by TV Nova (which is otherwise normally known for its sensationalism) the incident at issue was actually a blow to the head with some sort of object, causing an injury that was treated with one stitch.  full story
