Czech Republic: Children's text messages prove incident not one of "Roma gang violence", as media incorrectly reported

17.10.2017 9:57 The editors of news server Romea.cz have seen copies of the electronic communications between the youths who were recently involved in a public brawl in the town of Louny. The communications conclusively document that reports describing the incident as involving a gang of Romani youths demanding protection money from non-Romani children - the version disseminated by some media outlets (such as Deník.cz) and by some online social network users - is incorrect.  full story

Czech Republic: Children's fight mischaracterized by media as "Roma gang violence"

16.10.2017 8:08 The Facebook social network has been circulating a video recording of an aggressive assault by a Romani youth on two schoolchildren in a park in the Czech town of Louny. The state police are investigating and have beefed up morning and afternoon patrols around schools there in collaboration with local police, and the Department of Social Affairs and Health Care of the local authority has also begun investigating.  full story

Czech Police investigating video of father encouraging his daughter to imagine she is beating "Gypsies"

5.8.2017 9:11 News server Aktuálně.cz has spoken with the man who made a video of himself encouraging his daughter to beat a pillow with a baseball bat while imagining she is beatng a "Gypsy" or a Muslim, an action he has told them he does not regret. After news server Romea.cz broke the news of the video going viral on Facebook, police have begun their investigation of the case.  full story

25.7.2017 6:48 Czech Television broadcast on Sunday an episode of its cycle called "GEN", which means "gene" in Czech and is said to stand for "Gallery of the Elite of the Nation", featuring the portrait of the Romani activist, journalist, and mechanical engineering graduate Karel Holomek. Direction of the episode was done by the famous documentary filmmaker, actor and college educator Břetislav Rychlík.  full story

23.6.2017 13:00 US media are reporting that Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez  was acquitted of all charges on Friday 16 June 2017 in the shooting death of Philando Castile, a 32-year old African American man, on 6 July 2016. Footage of the incident retrieved from the dashboard camera of Yanez’s police car was released to the public on Tuesday 20 June 2017.  full story

videoRomea.cz recovers mobile phone video of Czech Police procedure against Romani driver, case being reviewed by oversight board

20.11.2016 10:24 News server Romea.cz published the mobile phone video yesterday of an incident between a police officer and a Romani driver during a traffic stop at the beginning of November on the Máj housing estate in the town of České Budějovice after which the driver had to seek medical attention and was hospitalized with a bruised neck and suspected concussion. The driver had been attempting to film one of the officers involved in the traffic stop using his mobile phone, but the officer physically prevented him from doing so, took the phone away, erased the recording and smashed the phone itself.  full story

Together with local and international NGOs, women from the Roma community in Ostrava in particular have persevered in this quest, despite minimal resources and support. Their one ally is the Czech public defender of rights (the ombudsman), whose recommendations made in 2005 remain unimplemented by the government, despite calls by the government's own advisory bodies to acknowledge responsibility for the violations, apologize to the victims and provide compensation.  full story
