Belgian edition of TV competition "The Voice" won by 13-year-old Romani girl from Slovakia

30.6.2017 7:50 The most recent season of the Belgian branch of the music show "The Voice Kids 2017" has been won by 13-year-old Katarina Pohlodková, whose parents are originally from Slovakia. She fought her way through to the final round with the song "She Believes in Me", originally performed by the Belgian singer André Hazes, which was a mega-hit as "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys.  full story

Czech Police charge bodybuilder with threatening Roma, he faces three years if convicted

29.6.2017 17:06 Filip Grznár (age 32) of Plzeň has been charged by detectives in Chomutov, Czech Republic with committing violence against a group and its individual members and approving of a crime. "Using the publicly available computer network, he disseminated a video recording in which he himself appears and approves of the commission of the serious crime of a recent murder at a housing estate in Chomutov," said the press spokesperson for the Ústecký Regional Police Directorate, Lieutenant Colonel Marie Pivková.  full story

Czech Police investigating video in which non-Romani bodybuilder threatens Roma in Chomutov with murder

27.6.2017 15:09 Police in Chomutov, Czech Republic have confirmed they have begun investigating the video recording in which the bodybuilder and Internet "celebrity" Filip Grznár comments on the recent murder of a Romani man there. "For the time being, an investigation is underway on suspicion of the crime of approving of a criminal act as per Section 365 Criminal Code, or perhaps incitement to hatred against a group of persons or restriction of their rights and freedoms as per Section 356 Criminal Code," police spokesperson Marie Pivková told news server Romea.cz yesterday.  full story

Čeněk Růžička: It's strange for LGBT people to hold the rainbow and Romani flags while speaking of Roma pride

organized by the Prague-based ARA ART association, whose director, David Tišer, is an activist, artist, and Romani Studies scholar who is a member of both the LGBTI and the Romani communities. Tišer posted a photo of the Romani people attending the conference holding both the international rainbow flag of the LGBT community and the international Romani flag to his Facebook profile.  full story

Slovakia: Three skinheads assault Romani mother and her children with racist abuse

20.6.2017 15:02 News server Novinky.sk reported yesterday that a young Romani mother named Naděžda was targeted for attack in the Slovak village of Snina by three aggressive men who looked like skinheads. Just before 8 PM the men broke into her home, where she was alone with her children, the youngest of whom is a two-week-old infant.  full story

Czech Republic: Family of Romani man shot dead in Chomutov doesn't want demonstrations

Yesterday the Václav Havel Library in Prague presented a discussion seminar as part of the festival's "Gavoro" ("Village") cycle on "Romani Characters in (Non)Romani Literature", featuring the authors Ilona Ferková, Jana Hejkrlíková, Kateřina Sidonová and Jáchym Topol, who is also a journalist.  full story

Harvard survey over 15 years finds Czechs are Europe's biggest racists, critics question its methodology

19.5.2017 13:28 The Czech Republic has come in first place in a notorious category, that of latent racism, according to the "Map of Racism", which is a survey conducted by the IAT at Harvard University in the USA and which was first published by the US-based portal The Conversation. "Journey to the Past" will mark Roma Genocide Remembrance Day at Auschwitz this August

Czech Republic: Romani family of quintuplets ineligible for state benefits after private fundraising fiasco

11.5.2017 6:57 The family with quintuplets in the Czech Republic whose fates news server Romea.cz has long been reporting on is now no longer eligible for the state's housing supplement or living allowance. In March of this year, the family of Alexandra Kiňova received over CZK  600 000 [EUR 23 000] from a collection established by the Prague City Hall, thereby forfeiting their legal entitlement to social benefits.  full story

France: Journalist sentenced to six months for racist articles about immigrants from the Maghreb and Romani people

25.4.2017 8:46 The website France Bleu reports that an unusually harsh verdict has been handed down in France in the matter of two racist articles published in August 2015 by the Petit Journal Catalan weekly. Journalist Rodolphe Crevelle, who is known for his extreme right-wing positions, attempted to obliterate the reputation of North African immigrants from the Maghreb and members of the Romani community (specifically, the Catalan Gitanos) through his pieces.  full story
