Czech sociologist refutes President's allegations about Romani unemployment, agrees with ROMEA

8.10.2018 19:12 Czech President Miloš Zeman has doubled down on his insinuations about Romani people not working when responding to the hundreds of photographs posted to Facebook by Romani people showing themselves on the job. Speaking on Friday, he called the photos an initiative by just "one-tenth" of the country's Romani population.  full story

Czech Civic Democrats want to suspend welfare for misdemeanor recidivists

8.10.2018 18:10 The opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS) submitted a bill on 1 October in the Czech lower house that would make it possible to deprive welfare recipients of their benefits, including housing benefits, for up to three months should the recipient commit a misdemeanor three times during the course of one year, whether the infraction was disturbing nighttime quiet or petty theft. The proposed measures are part of a bill establishing the rules for when entitlement to welfare benefits elapses.  full story

Czech Republic: Eva Davidová, an ethnographer who loved Romani people, has passed away

26.9.2018 7:34 On Friday, 21 September, at the age of 85, Eva Davidová passed away. She was an art historian, ethnographer, photographer and also a sociologist who had dedicated herself since the mid-1950s to systematically studying the culture and lifeways of Romani people in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia.

German court says immigrant Romani pupil incorrectly assigned to "special school" deserves compensation

21.7.2018 6:57 News server Spiegel Online reports that a court in Cologne, Germany has decided that a 21-year-old plaintiff named Nenad M., who is a Romani man originally from Serbia, deserves compensation for the fact that he was incorrectly recommended to attend a "special school" for mentally disabled children for 11 years. Nenad M. was first recommended for enrolment into "special school" in Bavaria at the age of seven on the basis of IQ tests that were administered in the German language.  full story

Czech Museum of Romani Culture still waiting for funds for demolition of pig farm on genocide site

20.7.2018 17:13 Despite the fact that the last pigs were removed from the industrial farm at Lety u Písku in mid-March, the facility is in the same state as it was when the Museum of Romani Culture first took it over. While the previous owners, the AGPI firm, have already been paid, the Museum is now incurring a deficit through its current administration of the entire facility because the Government has not yet approved the transfer of the promised financing from the budget reserves for the reclamation of the site of the former concentration camp.  full story

Italy's Lombardy Region first to conduct census of Roma and Sinti, plans to raze illegal camps, Romani organizations protesting

10.7.2018 10:23 In Italy the legislature of Lombardy in the north of the country has given the green light to a discriminatory, unconstitutional census of Romani and Sinti people living in that region. Italian media report that a regional commission has been entrusted with auditing legally-established Romani settlements and that illegal ones are to be closed.  full story

Czech Republic: Forced sterilization will be focus of academic and public discussions

24.5.2018 8:12 ROMEA o.p.s. in collaboration with the Prague Forum for Romani Histories at the Czech Academy of Sciences‘ Institute for Contemporary History, the Museum of Romani Culture (MRC) and the Romani Studies Seminar at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University has just held the third in their series of public debates on the occasion of the state buying out the pig farm facility in Lety u Písku because of its location on a genocide site. The panel discussion, "Holocaust of the Roma: Contemporary Research in Czechoslovak Context" was attended by almost 60 people and took place in the unique venue that is Kampus Hybernská, a joint project of the City of Prague and the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.  full story

Czech memorial to Romani genocide apparently must be done in three years

28.4.2018 17:51 On Wednesday 18 April at Gallery VI PER in Prague a discussion was held about the process through which the new Lety u Písku memorial is to be created, its possible forms, and the role it should serve. The public debate about these various aspects of memorial creation was enriched by the opinions of the artist Pavel Sterec from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno Technical University, the art critic and historian Anežka Bartlová from the College of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM), and the editor and historian Čeněk Pýcha from the Education Department of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR).

Demolition of pig farm on Romani genocide site in Czech Republic could provide jobs for long-term unemployed

28.4.2018 9:31 On Wednesday, 25 April yet another in the series of discussions on the future of the former camp at Lety u Písku that has been organized by the Museum of Romani Culture and the ROMEA organization was held. This time the discussion happened directly in the community of Lety u Písku in the local authority's auditorium and, as moderator Alica Sigmund Heráková said, it came "not just to the place about which there is discussion, but also to the local reality, the local residents, and the region where the changes related to building the memorial will have the most impact."  full story

Gallery in Czech capital to host discussion about new memorial commemorating the Romani genocide
