videoGipsy.cz video sends the message that we can turn the negative into positive

On Sunday, 3 December, the band Gipsy.cz released its new video for a song called "Je to tak" ("That's How It Is"). The video takes place in a field near Křivoklát Castle and was directed by lead singer Radoslav Banga, who also performs in it.

TOMORROW: "Happening" at Prague memorial to Czechoslovak politician executed on false charges by the communist regime calls for preservation of Human Rights Minister post

On Wednesday, 6 December 2017 a day-long "happening" will be held to preserve the post of Human Rights Minister and to bolster the human rights agenda in the new Government. The beginning of the event, which is convened by the Czech Women's Lobby network of nonprofit organizations, will be 9:30 by the statue of Milada Horáková on Sněmovní Street in Prague's Lesser Quarter.

Petition demands Czech President resign and SPD party be dissolved for supporting racism

A former Czechoslovak soldier and member of the Romani community now living in Great Britain, Štefan Pongo, has initiated an online petition calling for the dissolution of the "Freedom and Direct Democracy" party of Tomio Okamura (the SPD) and the resignation of Czech President Miloš Zeman. For now more than 100 people have signed on to it and other signatures are being added continually.

Czech film director supports fundraising drive "THEY WANT TO GAS THEM, WE WANT TO SEND THEM TO SCHOOL!"

The ROMEA organization and others, as well as many public figures, have decided to respond to the current wave of hate and racism that is spreading through the Czech Republic. Together they are joining the fundraising drive for the Roma Scholarship Program, which is supporting 86 students from all over the Czech Republic during this school year.

Czech city chooses streets where housing benefits are now banned for new tenants

According to an amendment to the law on aid to those in material distress, municipalities are now able to define zones where housing benefits should not be awarded to residents. One of the many towns anticipating that it can use this option to halt an influx of impoverished families is Ústí nad Labem.

Mário Bihári and Bachtale Apsa launch new video Saturday with concert in Prague

On 2 December the Dlabačov cinema in Prague's Břevnov quarter will host the only concert this winter by Romani musician Mário Bihári and his band, Bachtale Apsa. As part of a special program of guest performers (such as Nicholas Arthofer on trumpet), the band will launch a video they filmed thanks to their friends from the "Unexcused Theater" ensemble (Neomluvené divadlo).

Czech sociologist: We must face down xenophobia by supporting those who are intimidated

Former Czech MP Ivan Gabal, who is also a well-known sociologist, has been interviewed by the Czech online broadcaster DVTV, describing to reporter Martin Veselovský why he decided to initiate the fundraising drive in support of the Romani and other children at a school in Teplice who were recently attacked online - "THEY WANT TO GAS THEM, WE WANT TO SEND THEM TO SCHOOL!" ("ONI JE DO PLYNU. MY JE DO ŠKOL!"). In his view it is important to support children and their parents when they become the targets of xenophobic attacks.
