The protests were organized by the conservative group ACT for America, an organization that self-identifies as the "only national security grassroots foundation" within the U.S. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which was created to fulfill the goals of the civil rights movement, analyzes ACT for America as an anti-Muslim hate group.
