Czech PM says migration must be addressed beyond Europe's borders

15.6.2018 15:44 Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said on 11 June that he believes Frontex, the EU's border and coast guard, should be given a mandate to intervene beyond EU borders. Italy: New Government demands closure of Romani encampments, redistribution of asylum-seekers by EU

11.6.2018 10:35 New Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has emphasized that his country is demanding the automatic, compulsory redistribution of asylum-seekers throughout the EU by the Member States. He made the remarks in a speech on 6 June to the Italian Senate which, after debate, gave the new "Government of change" a vote of confidence.  full story

Italian police forcibly evict yet another Roma camp

According to Italian news site La Stampa, Italian police in Beinasco demolished a Roma camp on 7 March, forcing five families to leave their homes. Almost all the camp’s inhabitants had already left the location in recent days, complying with an ordinance issued on 20 December 2017 by the municipality. One elderly woman remained in her home, only to be driven out by bulldozers.

Tensions rising between Austria and Italy over migrants

The chair of the Socialist group in the European Parliament (EP), Italian MEP Gianni Pittella, has accused the Austrian Foreign Minister of wanting to transform one of the Italian islands in the Mediterranean Sea into a "concentration camp".  full story

Italy: Children and Pregnant Romani Women Left Homeless

15.6.2017 17:10 Unlawful demolitions of Romani property in Italy are rendering members of that community homeless, including newborns and pregnant women. Most recently Romani people were driven from the Germagnano informal settlement in Turin two weeks ago, according to the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), based in Budapest.  full story

Italy: 1 000 attend march to mourn Romani children who died in arson attack

Italy: Two Romani children and their older sister die in arson attack

Italy: Racist murders refugee who fled Boko Haram

8.7.2016 10:30 Yesterday a member of the hardcore football fans generally referred to as "ultras" worldwide caused fatal injuries to a refugee from Nigeria in the town of Fermo in central Italy. Emmanuel Chidi Namdi, age 36, died as a result of his injuries in hospital yesterday, Agence France-Presse reports.  full story

Hundreds protest border closure between Austria and Italy and demand a border-free Europe

8.5.2016 15:32 Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police yesterday at the Brenner Pass in the Alps that connects Austria with Italy. The demonstrators were mostly young left-wing radicals from Italy who attempted to cross the border, which Austria is preparing to establish checkpoints at to stop any eventual flow of migrants into the country.  full story

European Roma and Travellers Forum calls summer demolitions of Romani dwellings "unprecedented"

3.9.2015 22:03 The European Roma and Travellers Forum has released a statement called "Evictions Unlimited" on what it calls an "unprecedented upsurge" in the demolition of Romani housing and eviction of Romani people both in EU Member States and in countries such as Albania. Whether the demolitions and evictions have involved the use of force or not, the ERTF says they have all been "marked by the policy of rejection".  full story

EU interior ministers offer 8 000 fewer places than needed for refugee redistribution

20.7.2015 23:32 EU-28 interior ministers did not manage to fully agree today on the redistribution of 40 000 asylum seekers currently located in Greece and Italy. Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said the EU-28 states have offered to redistribute only 32 000 people during the next two years.  full story

Italian court rules that official camps for Roma only are discriminatory as evictions continue

23.6.2015 19:28 On 9 June the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) reported the Italian media as saying that approximately 100 Romani people are to be evicted from a facility called the Ferrotel building by the Municipality of Cosenza and relocated to an official, segregated tent camp. A total of 400 Romani people now living in the informal Vaglio Lise camp there have also been targeted for removal for some time.  full story
