Czech institutions designing memorial about the genocide of the Roma are inspired by Norwegian remembrance sites

25.6.2018 12:58 Representatives of institutions contributing to designing the building of a new memorial to the genocide of the Roma at Lety u Písku in the Czech Republic made a trip at the beginning of June to locations that commemorate various historical events in Norway. The 10-member group visited leading Norwegian institutions working with awareness about the events of the Second World War as well as more recent history.  full story

Czech chair of National Council of People Living with Disabilities lets himself be used to promote populist, xenophobic party

25.6.2018 6:48 The chair of the National Council of People Living with Disabilities, Václav Krása, who is also a former MP for the Civic Democrats (ODS) and Freedom Union (Unie svobody) parties, has contributed to designing the program for the "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) party for the local elections in Prague and calls the party worthy of support. Krása sees no problem in collaborating with a party that disseminates disinformation and incites hatred in society.  full story

France gives Czech Public Defender of Rights Anna Šabatová its highest state award, the Legion of Honor

24.6.2018 14:25 The Czech Public Defender of Rights, Anna Šabatová, has received France's highest state award, the Legion of Honor, for her lifelong determination to fight to defend human rights and the rule of law. The honors were awarded by a decree from French President Emmanuel Macron and were give to her on Friday, 15 June by French Ambassador Roland Galhargue.  full story

Czech region where evictions are underway keeps rejecting plans to subsidize lunches for impoverished schoolchildren

21.6.2018 11:20 News server iDNES.cz reports that the Ústecký Regional Assembly has refused to support a motion from its Regional Council to allocate regional finances to cover the costs of lunches at school for children from impoverished families. The assembly members were especially bothered by the fact that the financing was to have been distributed through a nonprofit organization.  full story

Czech Police indict bodybuilder who praised shooting of Romani man and made his own death threats

27.4.2018 12:26 News server Lidovky.cz reported on 24 April that police in Chomutov, Czech Republic have proposed indicting bodybuilder Filip Grznár for felony approval of crime and violence committed against a group or its individual members. Last June the bodybuilder disseminated a video online in which he threatened local Roma in Chomutov with murder, expressed aggressive, vulgar opinions about the shooting death of a Romani man there, and expressed his backing for the man who murdered him.  full story

Czech city ignores Constitutional Court and refuses to abolish ordinance banning sitting outdoors

24.4.2018 15:52 The Mostecký deník daily reports that the City of Most is rejecting a call from the Czech Interior Ministry to abolish the unlawful part of a local ordinance banning sitting outdoors other than in locations intended for that purpose. "This is an effective tool for the local police and we do not just want to give it up," said Mayor Jan Paparega  full story

Czech PM to attend commemorative ceremony to honor Holocaust victims who are Romani

5.3.2018 19:30 On Wednesday, 7 March, a commemoration will be held of the 75th anniversary of the first mass transport of Romani people from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia
(transported from Brno) to the concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz II-Birkenau. The event will be attended by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Czech Culture Minister Ilja Šmíd, other Government representatives, ambassadors, and representatives of cultural institutions.  full story

Czech lower house refuses vote about denier of Romani genocide as vice-chair, Christian Democrats call for extraordinary session

28.2.2018 7:40 The Chamber of Deputies decided not to vote on whether to remove the chair of the SPD party, Czech MP Tomio Okamura, from his post as vice-chair of the lower house because of his remarks about the former concentration camp at Lety u Písku. The head of the Christian Democratic (KDU-ČSL) legislators in the lower house, Czech MP Jan Bartošek, did not succeed with his motion to include that point on the agenda yesterday.  full story

Czech Museum of Romani Culture to sign cooperation agreement with European Grassroots Antiracist Movement tomorrow

25.1.2018 9:24 On Friday, 26 January at 18:00 there will be a celebration at the French Institute in Prague to mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the European Grassroots Antiracist Movement (EGAM) and the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno, Czech Republic. The institutions pledge to collaborate on defining the future concept of the memorial at the site of the former concentration camp for Romani people at Lety.  full story

Czech MP to host ultra-right leaders from all over Europe, protests anticipated

14.12.2017 16:34 In Prague on Saturday, 16 December a conference will be held of parties from around Europe that are anti-EU, anti-immigrant and ultra-right and are associated in the "Europe of Nations and Freedom" (ENF) group at the European Parliament (EP). Czech MP Tomio Okamura, whose "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) movement is a member of the ENF, will make an appearance at the conference, as will the chair of the ENF, MEP Marine Le Pen of France's Front National, along with the Dutch MP Geert Wilders.

Czech court fines online racists a mere EUR 4 for death threats against Romani celebrity

8.12.2017 18:17 Last year Romani singer Radek Banga used Facebook to explain his departure of protest from the "Czech Nightingale" popular music awards and was subsequently flooded with thousands of hateful messages. The performer left the gala during a live television broadcast to protest the neo-Nazi past of the singer Tomáš Ortel, who won two "Silver Nightingale" awards last year.  full story

Racially-motivated attack by football fans on African man on a tram in the Czech capital - nobody came to his aid

Czech Republic will not hold a Roma Spirit award ceremony this year due to lack of financing and criticism by some Romani community members

21.10.2017 15:23 This year the Roma Spirit awards ceremony, which supports the active efforts of all who contribute to improving the living conditions of Romani people in the Czech Republic, will not be held. Czech Interior Ministry monitoring up to 40 disinformation servers

28.6.2017 11:24 The Czech Interior Ministry is monitoring as many as 40 online servers which they believe are harming the interests of the Czech state, according to news server Aktuálně.cz, which has managed to acquire internal materials from the ministry and statements from some highly-positioned officials there. The servers being monitored include websites that purely serve disinformation purposes, as well as websites that are manipulative or propagandistic.  full story

Slovak President Kiska: Let's stop speaking of the "Romani problem" and use Romani potential

Czech Olympic athlete: Neo-Nazi opinions are being made dangerously palatable today

24.4.2017 8:00 According to the Czech sprint canoeist Filip Dvořák, extremist opinions are being given to the public today in a much more palatable way than ever before and people are more receptive to them for various reasons. The athlete, who has won the Czech Republic's championship in the sport more than once and is also a successful Olympic competitor, made his remarks in an interview for news server isport.cz, where he expressed his own position on racism and xenophobia, which he believes has no business being part of contemporary society.  full story

Facebook blocks fascist party's official profile, including Slovak politician's personal page

24.4.2017 6:47 At the start of April the Facebook social network began blocking the official profile of the fascist party called "Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia" (Kotleba –Ľudová strana Naše Slovensko) and several other pages administered by its supporters, including the profile of party chair Marián Kotleba. Other blocked Facebook pages include, for example, the profile of Slovak MP Milan Mazurek, who is the vice-chair of the ĽSNS, and Milan Uhrík, the probable candidate for the party in Nitra, where he plans to run for Regional Governor.  full story
