Hungarian pro-Government weekly publishes blacklist naming alleged "non-conformists"

Yesterday Hungary's pro-Government Figyelö weekly published the names of 200 people whose views do not conform to those of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, alleging that they belong to a group the PM has labeled as "mercenaries" working for the American financier of Hungarian origin George Soros, according to the Associated Press. The blacklist includes primarily members of groups defending human rights, anti-corruption organizations, defenders of refugees, investigative journalists, and also officials of the Central European University (CEU), headquartered in Budapest, which was established by Soros.

Czech Labor Inspection discovers highest numbers of discriminatory want ads in four years

News server iRozhlas.cz reports that despite very low unemployment levels, the State Office of Labor Inspection in the Czech Republic has reported a record-high number of discriminatory want ads in which employers a priori exclude either foreign nationals or Romani people from applying. The number of such ads was the highest it has been since 2014.

US Ambassador hangs the Romani flag at the US Embassy in Prague

As in previous years, the Embassy of the United States of America in Prague hung the Romani flag on its building to mark International Romani Day (8 April). US Ambassador Stephen King hung the flag from the window of the Embassy on the afternoon of Monday, 9 April.

Czech Foreign Ministry flies Romani flag, outgoing Foreign Minister and Justice Minister meet with Roma

On the occasion of International Roma Day, the outgoing Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Martin Stropnický and outgoing Justice Minister Robert Pelikán met at the Czech Foreign Ministry on 9 April 2018 with several Romani figures. The main subject of the meeting was support for the Romani minority and improvement of interethnic coexistence and tolerance between the majority society and the Romani minority in the Czech Republic and the international context.

Czech trial of last year's murder of a Romani man in Chomutov, defendant claims he was trying to protect people

On 4 April the Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem began to hear the case of last year's murder at a housing estate in Chomutov. Petr Benda (age 37) faces up to 20 years in prison and has been charged with firing his weapon 13 times at a van being driven by Radek Š.

Professor Iulius Rostas participated in a panel called the "Rights of the Roma Child: The Struggle to Combat School Segregation in the EU" during the European Conference hosted by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and the Sloan School of Management at MIT. There was discussion about the costs of Roma school segregation, the current EU and national policies towards the topic, and the role of national and local governments.
