Prague tram driver says attack on sleeping Romani man was racially motivated

Prague, 2.2.2012 19:29, (ROMEA) Last week two men with shaved heads attacked a fellow passenger on a tram in Prague's 8th district. The victim was seated and asleep. Both of the assailants, wearing hoods, beat him up. They then got off the tram and fled into the metro. The driver of the tram says the attack was racially motivated  full story

Update in Czech press on Romani burn victim prompts hateful comments

Czech Republic, 30.1.2012 20:15, (ROMEA) Less than a month ago, the Czech Supreme Court rejected the appeal of the four arsonists who committed a racially motivated attack on the home of a Romani family in Vítkov with Molotov cocktails in 2009. The daughter of the family who was severely burned in that attack, Natálka, is already learning to communicate with her peers at nursery school. Since the start of January she has been attending a nursery school for a few hours each day in the village to which her family moved after the attack. Czech Government Agency for Social Inclusion ends work in Chomutov and Duchcov

Chomutov/Duchcov/Prague, 30.1.2012 18:59, (ROMEA) Members of the Monitoring Committee of the Czech Government Agency for Social Inclusion in Romani Localities decided at their meeting last Thursday to end the Agency's collaboration with the towns of Chomutov and Duchcov. "The main reason we are ending the collaboration in Duchcov is the fact that all 10 of the main planned measures to support social inclusion were rejected at the town councilors' November meeting. That de facto makes it impossible for the Agency to perform any meaningful activity there," Agency director Martin Šimáček explained.  full story

Czech court sentences neo-Nazi to community service for assault on activist, who has appealed

Most, 11.1.2012 17:32, (ROMEA) A court in the Czech town of Most has handed down a verdict in the matter of an attack that was committed against human rights activist Ondřej Cakl during a neo-Nazi demonstration in November 2008 in Litvínov. The court did not award compensation for damages. The convicted assailant, František Brávek, will have to perform 300 hours of community service. The verdict has not yet taken effect and Cakl has appealed.  full story

Romani woman murdered in Prague, locals allege perpetrators are Nazis

Prague, 10.1.2012 2:16, (ROMEA) Three youths who have recently confessed to murdering a Romani woman in the Prague 3 district of Jarov were not first-time offenders but had previously assaulted a homeless couple not far from a trail that leads from a local housing estate there into a wooded area. Local residents say the youths did not attack homeless people only, but basically anyone they felt like targeting.  full story

Czech Republic: 18 felony charges result from police operation against neo-Nazis

Prague, 15.12.2011 15:12, (ROMEA) Czech Television has reported that detectives with the Organized Crime Detection Unit (Útvar pro odhalování organizovaného zločinu - ÚOOZ) have announced the completion of "Operation Power", their most recent strike aimed particularly against ultra-right extremists in the Czech Republic. The operation was performed during the previous government of Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer and has resulted in charges being filed against 18 people for advocating neo-Nazism.  full story

A representative of the Havířov town hall called upon the chair of the right-wing extremist Workers' Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti -DSSS), Tomáš Vandas, to end the rally. Czech Republic: More violence between ethnic Czech and Romani people

Ústí nad Labem, 16.10.2011 23:46, (ROMEA) Police in the Czech Republic are investigating an attack reportedly committed by a group of Romani people against two ethnic Czechs in the North Bohemian town of Ústí nad Labem. The incident took place Friday evening and resulted in the injury and hospitalization of the ethnic Czechs, according to TV Nova. Romani youth protest against anti-Roma violence in Bulgaria and Czech Republic

Strasbourg, 29.9.2011 12:21, (ROMEA) Participants in a Romani youth conference in Strasbourg held a protest yesterday in front of the European Commission and the European Parliament responding to the rise in anti-Roma sentiment and violence against Roma across Europe, primarily in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Young Romani people called on the Council of Europe and the European Parliament to pay immediate attention to the rise in anti-Roma riots in these countries.  full story

Nový Bor, 7.9.2011 0:59, (ROMEA) This coming Saturday, the extremist Workers' Social Justice Party (Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti - DSSS) will be convening three demonstrations in the Šluknov foothills. In response to these hate gatherings, an initiative called Hate is No Solution (Nenávist není řešením) is convening a peaceful gathering to show that respectable people believe hatred is not the solution to the situation there. "The civic initiative 'Hate is No Solution' ('Nenávist není řešení') is convening a peaceful gathering on Saturday, 10 September in Nový Bor at 12:00 and then another one in Rumburk, which will start at 17:30," the initiative's press release reads.  full story

Civil society members of Czech Government Inter-ministerial Commission on Roma Community Affairs distance themselves from Czech Human Rights Commissioner

Prague, 29.8.2011 22:04, (ROMEA) News server Romea.cz has received a declaration on the tense situation in Šluknov district from the civil society members of the Czech Government Inter-ministerial Commission on Roma Community Affairs. The Commission is an advisory body to the Czech Government. One half of the Commission is comprised of a civil society section of Romani figures, while the other half is comprised of representatives from various ministries. Originally, in order to make the Commission efficient and more significant, it was designed so that cabinet members at ministerial level would participate in it, but that original design has never been implemented. Membership on the Commission is honorary and unpaid.  full story
