International journalism conference: Media consumers today are more like sports fans

5.10.2018 8:25 The modern hall of the library at the University of Warsaw is full; approximately 150 journalists from 28 countries are sitting here and their debate confirms that many of the problems both journalism and society are currently undergoing are similar whether one is the eastern or the western parts of Europe. The only Czech participant there is the HlídacíPes.org ("Watchdog") media outlet, a partner of the conference put together by the German organization "N-ost".  full story

USA: Four racists arrested over last year's violence in Charlottesville

3.10.2018 11:11 Reuters reports that yesterday the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States arrested four radical adherents of white supremacy who participated in last year's violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Those arrested are members of an antisemitic, racist movement and were among the most violent participants in last year's clash with those opposed to racism that directly resulted in the death of one person and dozens of injuries.  full story

2.10.2018 15:48 The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) has sent an open letter to the President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman, condemning his most recent hate speech about his fellow citizens who are Romani. News server Romea.cz is publishing the entire letter in Czech translation along with the ERRC's call for people to add their own voices and send the President an e-mail.  full story

European Roma Rights Centre: Czech President's remarks were antigypsyist hate speech

2.10.2018 8:31 Yesterday the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) sent an open letter addressed to Czech President Zeman and objecting to recent comments he made about Romani people when he was speaking last week in the Olomouc Region - Zeman alleged that exactly the Romani residents of the particular community he was visiting constitute their population of unemployed people, which the ERRC believes was a racist characterization. Zeman went on to allege that during the communist regime, Romani people "had to work" and were imprisoned if they refused to do so.  full story

Slovak PM on Romani settlements: Incentivize employment, no tolerance for disorder

24.9.2018 7:48 News server WebNoviny.sk has reported that at last week's cabinet session in the town of Svidník, Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said he does not intend to tolerate disorder in the country's Romani-inhabited settlements. The PM is demanding proposals from cabinet ministers on how to ensure security and uphold order and what he called "decent behavior" in the settlements.  full story

Russian social network blocks "Miss Hitler" beauty contest after Israeli media contact

22.9.2018 9:56 The news server timesofisrael.com reports that Russia's online social network Vkontakte (VK), which is similar to the US-based social network Facebook, has blocked a page dedicated to Adolf Hitler that was hosting an online beauty competition called "Miss Hitler". Slovakia now has an MP from the Romani minority, Štefan Vavrek

19.9.2018 9:14 Wire services report that Slovakia's unicameral legislature has just seated a new MP. After MP Edita Pfundtnerová (Most-Híd) relinquished her seat in order to become a state secretary at the Justice Ministry, Romani community member Štefan Vavrek has now replaced her.  full story

German Police find right-wing extremists' list of 25 000 "enemies"

8.8.2018 6:01 Deutsche-Presse Agentur (DPA) reported last week that the German Police found a list with the names of 25 000 persons considered political enemies by right-wing extremists during an anti-terrorist raid in the northeast of the country last year. Roma Holocaust Memorial Day marks the Nazi murder of Roma and Sinti at Auschwitz on 2-3 August 1944

Romania: 900 protest recent violence against Roma in Italy and Ukraine, more demonstrations in other European countries to follow

Slovak Govt Plenipotentiary for the Romani Community: Žilina is a textbook example of hate crime

27.7.2018 8:12 The recent attack on Romani people in Žilina, Slovakia, one of whom is hospitlaized with a brain hemorrhage, is a textbook example of hate crime according to the Slovak Government Plenipotentiary for the Romani Community, Ábel Ravasz (a member of the Most-Híd party), and should be prosecuted as one. The chair of the Romani Union civic association in Slovakia (ÚRS), František Tanko, says Romani people abroad and in Slovakia are outraged by the racist crime and have announced a protest march in Žilina.  full story
