Bulgaria: Roma at home and abroad respond to violence committed during anti-Romani protests

25.6.2015 0:18 On 23 June 2015, Jovan Damjanović, president of the Belgrade-based World Roma Organization, sent an open letter to the Bulgarian Prime Minister expressing his organization's surprise over the recent violent anti-Romani protests that have taken place in Sofia and elsewhere. "I expect that you will do everything to avoid the use of force against the Roma community and I urge that, in accordance with international conventions and the rights of national minorities, you will provide all human and civil rights of Roma in the Republic of Bulgaria," the letter reads.  full story

Bulgaria: Roma respond to anti-Romani protests in the capital

23.6.2015 16:57 On 14 June the FOCUS News Agency cited police reports that a protest against the "lawlessness of Roma people" on 13 June had resulted in several injuries in the Orlandovtsi district of Sofia, Bulgaria. A brawl reportedly broke out between non-Romani and Romani residents there.  full story

Czech Republic: 30 Romani people demonstrate for reopening of murder investigation

13.4.2015 3:40 Just 30 people assembled on Saturday, 11 April in the Czech town of Tanvald for a demonstration demanding a new investigation into the case of the shooting death of Ladislav Tatár, Jr. Jan Sieber of Tanvald was 63 years old when he shot the Romani youth and his brother in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2012.  full story

Czech Republic: Romani caretakers to supervise building safety in Zlín Region

Zlín Region, 2.2.2015 18:56, (ROMEA) The Zlín Regional Administration has approved a subsidy to the ARGO civic association for the sixth time for the provision of Romani caretakers in selected localities. The Romani localities in the towns of Holešov, Kroměříž, Uherský Brod and Zlín will each receive a Romani caretaker.  full story

Czech Republic: Activists convince Romani voters in Krupka not to sell their votes

Krupka, 29.9.2014 22:43, (ROMEA) News server iDNES.cz reports that NGOs fighting corruption have done their best over the weekend to convince local Romani voters in Krupka not to sell their votes in the upcoming local elections. The last municipal polls there had to be repeated three times because of vote-buying, and suspicions exist this year that the situation could repeat itself.  full story

European NGOs protest nominee for Education Commissioner

Brussels, 26.9.2014 23:13, (ROMEA) In an open letter to President-elect of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, a coalition of European civil society networks and organizations say they consider the nomination of Tibor Navracsicsas as Commissioner for Education, Youth, Culture and Citizenship to be completely unacceptable. The NGOs say Navracsics was a proponent of policies implemented by Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán that contravene EU treaties, policies such as the constitutional reform process last year and media reforms in 2011 that Brussels itself criticized.  full story

Prague Pride 2014 offers 100+ events and support for the LGBT community in Eastern Europe

Prague, 12.8.2014 20:54, (ROMEA) A total of 117 cultural, social and sports events are featured on the program of the Fourth Annual Prague Pride festival, which focuses on the topic of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues between 11 and 17 August 2014 (the full program is here). Organizers have decided to invite gays and lesbians from Eastern European countries whose rights are being suppressed by their regimes or by conservatism in society to participate by proxy in the parade.  full story

Czech NGO wants to buy buildings from which Romani tenants were evicted

Ostrava, 2.8.2014 2:07, (ROMEA) The Life Together (Vzájemné soužití) NGO, led by Kumar Vishwanathan, wants to buy buildings on Přednádraží Street in Ostrava which are now going up for auction.
