Yambol Bulgarian city mayor, Georgi Slavov declared a state of emergency in an area of the city after a group of gypsies organized a violent protest distroying an apartment building after the mayor decided to evacuate them. According to local authorities, gypsies were living illegally in a building for about 15 years and destroyed the building. The decree was issued only for that area, an area populated by gypsies.
3.9.2010, 11:11
Ireland’s native gypsy community suffers from discrimination, health problems and a much lower life expectancy than the rest of the population, a study showed. The research by a team from University College Dublin comes amid concerns in the EU about the treatment of Gypsy communities, sparked by France’s ongoing expulsion of hundreds of Roma migrants. The study of the 40,000-strong community of gypsies in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland — known as “Travellers” — was the first of its kind in 22 years. The report found that in Ireland 42% and in Northern Ireland 46% of Traveller families said they very often felt discriminated against.
