A group of young Romanies today installed a
security device outside the Prague-Sterboholy shopping centre in an
effort
to show people how bad they feel in a situation where the majority
population considers all Romanies to be thieves. The
security device peeped each time a person passed past it.
"We want people to realise what it is like to feel like a thief without
being one," Jarmila Balazova, chairwoman of the co-organising Romea
association, told CTK.

The organisers want the majority
population to approach Romanies without
prejudices. People should realise that being a Romany does not mean
stealing, Balazova said.
During the event, held on the
occasion of the International Day of
Romanies, the organisers distributed leaflets reading "Imagine what it
is
like to feel like a thief for all your life. Think about Romanies
without
prejudices."
Most of the passers-by accepted the leaflet
and some stopped and discussed
things with the Romanies.
The Romea association has in
recent days joined many events with the aim to
persuade people to abandon the traditional, often unflattering opinion
about the Romany minority.
Romea focuses on education of
Romanies and on informing the public about
Romanies.
