The “tent city” that is likely to be used especially for Romani refugees from Ukraine was set up by firefighters last night in Prague’s Troja neighborhood at the behest of Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan (Mayors and Independents – STAN) with a total of 10 tents for 150 people, a dining room, showers and toilets. The town stands on the same site where the municipality has built “tent cities” in the past for homeless people who were quarantined due to COVID-19.

Building yesterday around 8 PM and was completed during that same night. “The tents measuring 6 x 9 meters include beds for 150 people and there are restrooms there,” said Martin Kavka, spokesperson for the fire brigade in Prague, adding that it will also be possible to heat the tents if necessary.

“There are 10 tents, we have also built canteens for food, showers and toilets,” Kavka said. Electricians will connect the “tent city” to potable water and sewerage, and it was to have been handed over to the administrator this morning.

“The tent city will be managed by the municipality together with the Refugee Facilities Administration. Romodrom and other Romani organizations will participate,” added Kavka.

“It is assumed there will probably be mostly Romani refugees here,” the firefighter spokesperson said; yesterday he also said firefighters could arrange the refugees’ transportation to the “tent city”. “Just like we drive the refugees from the main station to the KACPU assistance center,” he explained the process.
